This is a wonderful property from the company responsible for the legendary Jack’s Camp. Duke’s overlooks a seasonal lagoon and lies in a prime game-viewing area on the borders of the legendary Moremi Game Reserve. This is where the Okavango Delta receives its annual flood, which turns the parched Kalahari desert into a magical wetland and opens up floodplains and channels thrilling for water-based safari. The camp is visually stunning in a 1940s old-explorer style, with an attention to detail that really transports you back to that time! It’s the perfect camp for those looking for a little romance and something a bit special. The suites are sumptuous, with their four-poster beds and Bedouin fabrics, and your immersion into that bygone era is total. The camp is named after Sarefo ‘Duke’ Sarefo of the Wayeyi tribe, who was born on a nearby island and became a champion for the conservation of this remarkable part of the Okavango. With a full complement of both water- and land-based safari activities in addition to its inimitable style, Duke’s Camp is a great option for those looking to make the most of what the Delta offers.

  • Two game sessions daily are offered here, during the morning and the late afternoon. It’s possible to do a full-day trip and go farther into the park, for example if another couple wishes to join (just in terms of vehicle numbers and availability). Four of the Big Five can be found in this part of the Delta. Among the highlights are lion, leopard, elephant, hyena, and buffalo. You can look out for smaller predators too, such as jackal, serval, civet, honey badger, and the rare wild dog, while the large herbivore collection features giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and an assortment of antelopes.

  • Why not head out into the bush with an armed guide? As well as enjoying animal tracking and the area’s phenomenal birdlife, you’ll take a closer look at the concession’s insects and plant life. Different levels and distances are possible, depending on the ages of your group. Classic walking safari has a maximum age requirement of 12 years.

  • Sleep out beneath the stars on a private island! This is a memorable experience indeed, especially at Duke’s Camp. Usually, your afternoon game drive ends with sundowners nearby, before you’re ferried across to your adventurous island retreat for the night. There’s always a guide and an armed guard on watch and close by. Wake up and have a delightful bush breakfast, before heading back to camp. (At extra cost, needs pre-booking.)

  • The boating safaris here are spectacular. See elephant wading through the waterways, hippos, crocs, and a plethora of birdlife. The Okavango Delta has some of the best boating in Africa. Fishing is also an option and can be seasonal – and though it’s not for everyone, plucking a catfish from the Delta can be quite a thrill. Of course Duke’s operates a catch-and-release policy.

  • This is another exhilarating way of seeing the breadth of the Delta from the sky. It’s not quite as peaceful as being in a balloon, but you certainly cover more terrain and can stop off at spectacular places for picnics, such as the Tsodilo Hills. Flights come at extra cost and need to be pre-booked.

  • This activity is very much the walking safari of the water! You will be able to hear so much more as you silently glide through the endless water channels of the Delta. It’s a great chance to meet some of the smaller animals like frogs and birds, and get a closer look at flora. Best from June to September when the water is at its highest, and each canoe can accommodate a couple, plus your poler. (Botswana, June to Oct., when water at its highest.)

To get to Duke’s you can fly into the concessions airstrip on a scheduled light aircraft or by a private helicopter transfer from either Kasane or Maun. From here it’s a short transfer to camp by Landcruiser, often with some great viewing right from the start of your safari.
