Best Time to Visit
Desert, Delta, and stacks of game… Botswana is the purest safari destination, and it’s often the hardest to get right in terms of when to visit.
The flood that hits the Okavango Delta needs to be timed just right: we say, aim for May to July, but for epic wildlife sightings, definitely consider September or October. To get the balance just right, take a look below at our month-by-month guide to when to visit Botswana.
January

January in Botswana is unpredictable, with thunderstorms one day and bright sun the next. It’s rainy and humid, which can limit safari activities. Despite this, the month offers excellent photo opportunities with many young animals, predators, migratory birds, and flowers. Availability is good, making it a more affordable time to visit. Game concentrations can be low.
February

February is the height of Botswana’s green season, with frequent rains, thunderstorms, and warm, humid weather. Many herbivores give birth, attracting predators. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is popular for warm, mostly dry conditions mixed with storms. Availability is good and rates low, though heavy rains may affect some activities.
March

March offers mostly dry, sunny days with some thunderstorms. It’s great for birdwatching and photography, with vibrant marula trees fruiting. Lodges have good availability and lower rates than the May peak. Thick vegetation and mosquitoes can make wildlife spotting harder, but the scenery remains spectacular.
April

April transitions from hot rains to cooler dry weather. Mostly dry days and cooler evenings prevail, though occasional showers remain. Newborn zebra and impala appear, attracting predators. Most safari properties reopen, but lingering rains can make wildlife harder to find due to abundant water.
May

May is shoulder season with comfortable temperatures. The Okavango Delta floods, drawing abundant wildlife and spectacular birds. Camps and lodges have good availability and reasonable rates. Cooler mornings and nights occur, especially in the Central Kalahari. The lush Delta provides fantastic photo opportunities before peak season.
June

June starts Botswana’s dry winter season with cooler temperatures. Wildlife clusters near scarce waterholes. Peak season begins, so prices rise and availability drops, especially in northern regions. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, though daytime humidity may remain. Large elephant herds gather in Savuti and Chobe.
July

July is dry and cool, ideal for wildlife viewing as animals gather around the floodwater. The Okavango Delta is fully flooded, perfect for photography. Lodges fill quickly with high rates and there can be limited availability, so book early. Mokoro excursions are popular, and low rainfall means fewer mosquitoes.
August

August is a peak safari month featuring clear skies, cool temperatures, and excellent game viewing. Elephant numbers peak in Linyanti and Chobe, with animals clustering near permanent waterholes. Vibrant southern carmine bee-eaters are common in the grasslands. Availability is low and prices high, so booking early is critical. The dry, sunny weather provides fantastic conditions for photography and outdoor activities.
September

September is one of the best months for big game viewing in Botswana, with wildlife concentrated around limited water sources. It’s a popular and busy time, so early booking is essential. Photographers benefit from excellent light, and activities like walking safaris and mokoro trips are rewarding. Elephant herds in the north are impressive. However, some visitors may find the weather hot and dry.
October

October is a hot, transitional month with excellent game viewing as animals gather near scarce water sources. High temperatures can feel stifling, but wildlife activity remains strong, especially in Chobe and Linyanti. Availability remains tight and prices high. The heat leads to increased animal activity at waterholes, creating outstanding photo opportunities with large herds of elephants and other species.
November

November marks the start of the green season, with rain and cooler temperatures later in the month. Properties offer good availability and low rates, making it a great value time to travel. Wildlife remains concentrated near permanent water sources early in the month but scatters as rains increase. Mosquito numbers are still relatively low compared to peak wet months, and game viewing remains active.
December

December is very wet and humid, with afternoon rains offering relief from the heat. High humidity can be uncomfortable, and heavy rains may disrupt activities. This month is excellent for photographing young animals and lush landscapes, as many herbivores give birth. Property availability is generally good, and prices are lower than peak season. Mosquito activity increases, so precautions are advised.
