Well regarded as the finest safari country in Africa, it comes as no surprise that Botswana is a very good couples destination.
The safari parks here, and the lodges found within them, are so famous that a Botswana safaris is the top of most people’s list. The quality of safari here is undeniable. The game viewing on offer in Chobe, the Okavango, Moremi and Linyanti is as good as you will find anywhere.
The main decision couples should decide on when considering a trip to Botswana is whether they are looking for an adventurous style of holiday, or whether luxury is the most important driver in the style of trip they are after. Price is also a serious consideration – this is Africa’s most expensive safari destination.
For Luxury
In the high end of the market there are a number of companies that operate super luxury safaris within Botswana. &Beyond, Orient Express, Wilderness Safaris, Great Plains and Sanctuary Lodges are the main contenders. Over the years we have tried them all with our favourites being the phenomenal Wilderness Safaris and the camps owned by Great Plains. What we love most about these companies is the balance they have between luxury and authenticity – epitomising the essence of a Botswana safari.
Our favourite camps from both companies at their top price tags are Mombo, Kings Pool, Zarafa, Abu Camp and Vumbura Plains. However step down a price bracket and the likes of Duba Plains, Chitabe and Little Vumbura are still seriously good camps that would compete with anywhere else.
For Adventure
Staying in the high end of the market there is then one company that sticks on its own as the one company to operate truly adventurous trips – where the luxurious hospitality experience is not as important as the actual safari experience. The company is called Kwando, owners of four camps in two fantastic private reserves.
Our favourite camps in this high end adventure market are Kwando’s Lebala and also Little Kwara although their other camps Lagoon and Kwara itself are also superb.
For Value
The lodges we have mentioned so far start at $1,000pppn in the high season months! There is little denying that they offer some of the best safari experiences anywhere but for travellers who are looking to find more economical alternatives then the country also offers a number of less expensive camps that have charm and character, albeit at the sacrifice of the luxury and guiding quality of elsewhere.
Our favorites in this market are Muchenje, Selinda Explorer, Pom Pom, Tau Pan and Meno A Kwena.
