Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Uganda
Africa offers a variety of dramatic safari experiences to visitors. One of the most unique and captivating of them is trekking through pristine rainforests to see rare mountain gorillas.
Uganda and Rwanda are the two countries that offer the best-organised and most accessible gorilla treks. Every trek is different. So even if you are fortunate enough to do more than one gorilla trek in your life, each trek offers an entirely incomparable experience! Both countries offer quality accommodation, exceptional service, and a similar way of trekking to see the gorillas. However, as gorilla trekking permits in Uganda cost $800 per person, compared to $1,500 per person in Rwanda, Uganda is many travellers’ preferred choice for a more budget-friendly gorilla trek.
Why Choose Uganda for a Gorilla-Trekking Holiday?

The Ultimate Gorilla Habituation Experience

The gorilla habituation experience is different from the gorilla treks, as it allows you to spend almost four hours with a family group whom rangers are in the process of habituating. The full four-hour adventure starts from the time your group locates the spot where the gorillas nested down the night before, which will then be followed by a trek to find and observe them. They are usually very close by!
The gorilla habituation experience can only be done in Uganda and offers a deeper, more immersive encounter than a standard gorilla trek. Unlike regular treks, in which viewing time is limited to one hour, this experience allows almost four hours with a gorilla family whose members are still becoming accustomed to human presence. Tracking begins early, with rangers leading the way through dense, little-trodden forest, starting from the gorillas’ nests from the previous night. The route often involves rugged terrain, farmland, and thick jungle – this is real adventure trekking!

As these gorillas are not yet fully habituated, they tend to be more cautious. Your presence plays a role in the process of gradually familiarising them with humans, aiding ongoing conservation work. While the setting may limit close-up photography, the experience offers a raw and authentic insight into gorilla behaviour and the dedication of the rangers protecting them. Pairing this with a standard gorilla trek really is the ultimate gorilla safari!
The general feeling with the Yellow Zebra Uganda specialists is that if you want the best possible photo opportunities then two standard gorilla treks is best. The habituation experience offers more adventurous trekking. It involves an area of forest that is less visited, so there are few well-defined paths. You need to have the right gear and be prepared for challenging terrain. However, this trekking is pretty incredible! It’s similar to what it was like in the early days, when Dian Fossey first arrived in the area.

Cost of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

The first thing everyone mentions is the cost of the trekking permits – at $800 per person, Uganda is more affordable, making this country a more attractive option. For many clients, a gorilla-trekking safari is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, so to have the very best experience, we recommend two gorilla treks, and two treks in Uganda cost less than one trek in Rwanda. Bwindi National Park also offers a more immersive experience for nature lovers. During a stay at some of the lodges inside the park, you are not just visiting the gorillas – you are staying in their world with them. Costs for a gorilla trek will vary depending on when you travel and where you stay. Prices range from around $3,750 per person in low season, up to $6,105 in high season. This is based on two people travelling, staying for one night in Entebbe and three nights at Bwindi. These costs also include two gorilla-trekking permits per person.
Extending Your Trip for a Uganda Safari

Uganda is not just about gorilla trekking – there is so much more to see and do here! Murchison Falls National Park has classic game viewing and boating safaris, while the neighbouring Budongo Forest Reserve offers chimp trekking. Queen Elizabeth National Park on the shores of Lake Edward offers classic game-viewing safari. Kibale Forest National Park, just to the north, has both chimp trekking and a chimp habituation experience.

What Can You Expect from a Gorilla-Trekking Experience?
Why does gorilla trekking feature on so many people’s travel bucket list? We humans share approximately 98% of our DNA with gorillas, perhaps this is why the experience seems to strike a special chord for so many? These great apes are among the rarest animals on the planet. Spending time with them is incredibly special and will leave an indelible mark.
There is no avoiding the fact that gorilla trekking is one of the more expensive safari experiences. However, if you choose your lodge wisely and time it well, a trip to see the gorillas doesn’t need to break the bank! Our experts have first-hand experience of gorilla treks in Uganda and can design a bespoke safari just for you.
How to Prepare for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
Gorilla trekking is physically demanding, but if you are fit enough to walk your dog, you are fit enough to do a gorilla trek. You need to be able to walk a reasonable distance, so being physically fit is an advantage. However, there are ways to make it easier! Planning your gorilla trekking in Uganda with someone who can draw from their own experiences and help tailor your safari to fit your requirements is key.
What is the Best Time of the Year to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
People often prefer to trek during the dry-season months of December to early February and June to September. In the wet season, the rain can make trekking tougher in the forest. Paths get muddy and slippery, which can make the treks challenging and less enjoyable, especially if you get caught in a heavy shower. The movement and range of the gorilla families can differ depending on their members, as well as on the location of the fruiting trees that the gorillas enjoy eating from!
The peak dry-season months are popular, and lodges and trekking groups are normally fully booked at this time. In the low-season months, while you might have to work a bit harder for your trek and may get wet, the lodges will be much quieter and you’re more likely to secure a spot in a trekking group. This also increases your chances of having fewer than the maximum eight people in your group, which gives you a more intimate experience with the gorillas.
What to Wear When Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
Some lodges provide essential kit, so this is worth checking with your consultant. The main items to remember are:
- Long-sleeved lightweight shirt or T-shirt
- Waterproof jacket or poncho
- Long trousers
- Day backpack
- Waterproof hiking boots
- Pair of durable gloves (garden gloves)
- Facemask
- Hat
As with any safari clothing, it is best to wear colours that match the surrounding environment, and comfort should also be a priority.
Is There an Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in both Uganda and Rwanda is 15 years. Guests have to provide a copy of their passport when the permit application is made, and the age limit is strictly enforced.
