Kalepo Camp is an exclusive-use bushcamp with remarkable views of northern Kenya’s remote Mathews Range. It’s located in a beautifully preserved forested area sacred to the Samburu people, and authentic cultural encounters are the beating heart of this experience. Kalepo Camp is ideal for travellers wishing to explore an unfrequented and exceptionally scenic part of Kenya, perhaps even venturing farther north by helicopter to Lake Turkana. Listen out for Samburu warriors singing, look out for dung beetles on a nature walk, or read a book by the pool accompanied by birdsong – this is all about ‘slow safari’. Kalepo Camp is booked exclusively, and rates include all meals, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, activities, and road transfers from Kalepo airstrip.

Samburu Cultural Visits

  • Walking is a particular highlight of this region, with its scenic trails, lush greenery, and dramatic views. You’ll cross dry riverbeds (luggas), encounter local Samburu villagers herding goats, and come across small details such as animal tracks, spoor, and dung beetles.

  • Marvel at Samburu warriors, known locally as ‘morans’, in their colourful regalia, and try your hand at some of their traditional games. Perhaps you’ll learn how to throw a traditional spear or see if you can outjump them!

  • Soar high above the spectacular Mathews Range and take in the full scope of its mountains and valleys. Perhaps venture farther north to Lake Turkana, otherwise known as the ‘Jade Sea’, for a truly otherworldly adventure.

  • This area is the heartbeat of Samburu culture, and if you’re looking for authentic encounters, it is your place! Visit local villages, walk with herdsmen, and experience the ancient dry-season tradition of warriors singing as they dig for water.

The main area at Kalepo Camp is made up of a homely lounge and dining tent with an outdoor seating area and a small library pavilion. Adjacent to the mess tent, a lantern-lit campfire with cushioned seating provides a gathering place for morning coffee and pre-dinner drinks. The team can also arrange atmospheric bush dinners and starlit sundowners on the riverbed. The camp has a small plunge pool with an adjacent bar where guests can cool off with a refreshing drink while gazing at the mesmerising views. The food at Kalepo is excellent and relies mainly on home-grown ingredients.
