Rekero has a fine reputation as a small authentic camp in one of the Maasai Mara’s best game-viewing areas.

Operated by Asilia Africa, a company that is passionate about making a difference and preserving natural habitats while improving the lives of local people, Rekero Camp brings travellers close to the Great Migration while offering a diverse range of other activities. There’s a migration crossing point a short distance from Rekero’s dining area, and the Mara river is a short drive away. Rekero also wins points for its spacious tents, river views, and opportunities for children to get stuck into safari. Just watch out for flying arrows!

Our Yellow Zebra Opinion
  • Reliable favourite
Rekero is an old industry favourite and another property located in the thumping heart of the Maasai Mara’s best game-viewing area. High prices for this area, but a really great little camp.

  • These take place in the morning, afternoon, or as a full-day excursion including a picnic lunch en route. Rekero is well positioned to offer some seriously good game viewing – not only the migration river crossings but lots of other spectacular sights featuring all Big Five animals and many other predators and herbivores. The birdlife in the reserve is excellent, with over 470 resident and migrant species.

  • Soaring high over the Maasai Mara is one of the most memorable ways of viewing the plains and their resident wildlife. Hot air balloon safaris typically begin at 6am and last for an hour, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush.

  • Gain insight into traditional Maasai culture with a visit to one of the local villages on the outskirts of the national reserve. Please note, that this incurs an extra cost.

  • These are included in the price of your stay. Kids get to make their own bows and arrows, and then have a go at archery! They can also use the lawn for games such as football – though guests must bring their own equipment. Walks around the camp are also ideal for the little ones.

*Please note, although night drives and walking safaris are not permitted in the reserve, these activities are available at Rekero’s sister camp, Naibosho. We recommend combining a stay at Rekero with a few nights at Naibosho.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Natural, earthy tones complement the surrounding environment and give the lodge a fresh, light-filled aesthetic. Behind the lounge, a library doubles up as a private dining area – a cosy space housing a collection of Rekero’s historic photos. The lounge tent features carefully restored furniture, while the mess tent serves as the main dining area, with its long communal table. Tables are often brought out onto the main lawn for breakfast and lunch – great moments for bird-watching and observing life on the river. Sundowners are best enjoyed on the river deck while keeping an eye open for wildlife sightings. The gift shop sells souvenirs and craft items made by the camp’s staff and their families, in addition to curios created by children living in the suburbs of Nairobi.

Amenities

Rekero’s guest accommodation is connected to the main areas via a series of walkways, making it suitable for families with children aged six and above.

It consists of seven privately positioned standard tents and two family tents, all perched among the trees on the edge of the Talek river. The family tents are closest to the main areas and include an en-suite bedroom, similar to the standard tents, connected to a second bedroom by a communal living area. The second bedroom is also en-suite and has two single beds that can be made into a double, or even a triple if needed. It’s important to note that only the main bedroom faces the river. Both bathrooms feature a double basin, toilet, and shower with sliding doors. All the standard tents are doubles, though they can be reconfigured as triples on request. The style is classic safari but light-filled and airy, using earth tones, mango wood, and sheer linen curtains. Verandas offer the perfect spot to relax and enjoy views of the river.
