The reserve’s sprawling savanna, mopane woodland, riverine forest, and waterholes are home to a real wealth of wildlife. Lion, black and white rhinos, elephant, giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu, gemsbok, aardvark… these are just a few highlights, seen on morning, afternoon, or night drives. Birding is also very impressive, and Safarihoek’s guided walks are perfect for exploring the area in much greater detail.
Game drives are usually shared, but private drives can be booked in advance.
To get really close to nature, you can enter the lodge’s own hide, which has amazing views of a natural waterhole. The structure has two levels. On the ground floor, there’s a charging station with international adaptors, storage space for equipment, and excellent eye-level vistas of wildlife. The upper level contains another charging station, a ledge designed for bean bags and camera support, day beds, and a fridge!
Toilet facilities are also available, and the entire structure is wheelchair accessible. Fantastic photos are pretty much guaranteed!
Finally, guests can enjoy full-day trips into Etosha itself, to see a massive assortment of predators, herbivores, and birdlife.
All Big Five species are in residence – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – and you can opt to take a guided tour or self-drive through the park. Etosha is hard to beat for sheer volume of wildlife!
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course
Safarihoek Lodge is situated on a private reserve of some 600 square kilometres. It’s approximately 70 kilometres south-west of the Andersson gate into Etosha National Park. You can self-drive from Windhoek, or fly into the property’s own airstrip. The lodge and guest chalets have a fabulous location on top of a hill, with spectacular views over the reserve’s mopane woodland!
Safarihoek’s communal buildings are positioned closest to the standard rooms, and a short stroll from all the other chalets.
They too are timber, stone, and thatch structures, elevated on stilts to maximise views over the reserve. The lounge contains plenty of sumptuous seating around coffee tables, while the dining room has elegant separate tables and chairs. The bar extends from an indoor area onto a deck, which overlooks a popular waterhole! There’s a wine lounge too, where guests can sample vintages from the property’s own cellar. Further spaces for eating and drinking are provided by an outdoor boma and authentic braai area. The small curio shop is a hit with souvenir seekers, and the sparkling swimming pool is perfect for relaxing in between activities, with sunloungers and small tables alongside. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the communal spaces, and there’s a reasonable signal for mobile phones.
Each of Safarihoek’s guest chalets is made out of timber, stone, and thatch, with glass windows, and raised above ground level.
All are named after a local tree in homage to the surrounding woodland. Two chalet rooms are classed as ‘standard’ and are suitable for wheelchair users, while eight are ‘luxury’. The remaining one is the family unit, although two luxury chalets can be linked to provide accommodation for a maximum of two adults and two children. All options benefit from air conditioning, comfy king-size or twin beds, mosquito nets, bedside lighting, storage furniture, a writing desk and chair, a seating area, and spacious en-suite shower room or outdoor shower complete with complimentary eco-friendly toiletries. The children’s washing facilities include a bathtub. Additional amenities consist of tea-and-coffee station, a mini-bar, an electronic safe, and a hairdryer. A laundry service is available at extra cost. And doors lead out onto a lovely private veranda, where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery!
