The treehouse sleep-out experience is available for guests staying at least four nights at Beho Beho. It’s ideal for travellers seeking something really special during their time in the Nyerere. Designed for two people, it involves a walk from camp to an immense leadwood tree housing an en-suite double bedroom. The house has a canvas roof too, and this can be rolled back so there’s nothing between you and the stars!
The camp’s speciality is guided and guarded walking safaris, which start out during early morning and late afternoon.
Early walks include breakfast, while the later slot involves a sundowner stop! Walks are sometimes combined with vehicle safaris.
The sprawling plains, miombo woodlands, and riverine forests of Nyerere National Park are home to a highly impressive array of wildlife. All Big Five are in residence – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo!
Among the smaller predators and herbivores you can expect to see are cheetah, spotted hyena, jackal, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and an astonishing assortment of antelopes. There’s plenty of birdlife too – 440 species at last count!
The lakes and other water sources are positively overflowing with African skimmer and pink-backed pelican, while vibrant carmine and white-fronted bee-eaters populate the reserve’s sandbanks. These feathery friends and more besides may be seen on boat trips, which usually take place on Lake Tagalala, 50 minutes’ drive away – you can also look out for crocs and hippos!
The property is accessed via 5 minutes’ road transfer from its own airstrip. Unlike most of the camps and lodges in Nyerere National Park, it’s situated in the reserve’s highlands – the name Beho Beho references the cool breezes that waft through camp. There are sweeping views over the River Rufiji’s floodplain!

It’s a large timber, stone, and thatch structure, and entirely open sided to make the most of the spectacular views! Supported in part by tree trunks, the roof is very high so the fresh breezes can flow through all areas. The lounge space contains a medley of sofas, armchairs, and well-cushioned wood-framed seating around a coffee table. There’s also some reading material and a few occasional tables bearing intriguing artefacts, all positioned on a vibrant Persian rug! The well-stocked bar adjoins the lounge, and there’s a tea-and-coffee station too. In a separate area a couple of steps up from the lounge, you’ll find a library with additional seating and a billiards table. The dining area occupies the same level as the lounge, and usually everyone eats together at one big table. There are lots of al fresco dining spots too – for example, breakfast is usually enjoyed in the bush, and you can tuck into lunch on the camp’s sun deck. Travellers staying in Bailey’s Banda have the option of private dining, if preferred. Finally, Beho Beho has a lovely swimming pool, flanked by sunloungers and also a little thatched structure that’s great for keeping out of the sun. As this is farther up the hill, the views down to the valley floor are particularly breathtaking – you might even see a pod of hippo wallowing in a waterhole while you take a dip!v
Guest accommodation consists of ten bandas, including Bailey’s Banda, a two-bedroom cottage set up at a distance from the standard one-bedroom buildings.
All bandas have private plunge pools and are made out of local stone, and each has a palm-thatch roof. They are spaced well apart on either side of Beho Beho’s communal lodge. A crazy-paved path leads to the entrance, which opens into a very generously proportioned sleeping and living space. Furnishings feature a king-size bed or twin beds with mosquito netting, bedside lighting, a writing desk and chair, a couple of comfy armchairs and a table, and an ornate Zanzibari daybed. Every banda is open fronted, with a couple of steps down onto a veranda complete with telescope – here you can enjoy the spectacular views! Additional amenities include a ceiling fan and 24/7 electricity. There’s also a dressing room for storing your clothes and any other items. The en-suite facilities comprise screened flush toilet, twin washbasins in a large unit with mirrors over, and very refreshing outdoor shower. Toiletries are supplied, as are bathrobes and a hairdryer.
Bailey’s Banda boasts an additional bedroom, a large lounge, a sundeck, and a private plunge pool! If you opt for this banda, you have access to dedicated staff too, as well as a kitchen with chef, and an exclusive safari vehicle for tailored drives around Nyerere National Park.
