  • The main activity at Olakira is following the Great Migration, on exhilarating early morning and late afternoon game drives!

  • In the Mara region, the focus is the famous Great Migration river crossings, with guests also enjoying sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, black rhino, and the terrifying Nile crocodile! Both locations are brilliant for birdlife. While the camp is at Ndutu, the huge herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles are grazing on the region’s short-grass plains.

  • February is a particularly good time to visit, as this month usually sees a lot of calving! The presence of newborns attracts a lot of big cats, although lion, leopard, and cheetah are prevalent across the plains throughout mid-December into March. Smaller predators in Ndutu include spotted hyena, golden jackal, bat-eared fox, and (albeit rarely) wild dog.

  • Both camp locations provide the opportunity to go on a hot air balloon ride, ascending at dawn to glide over the Serengeti’s plains as the resident wildlife wakens to a new morning, then descending to a delicious bush breakfast. This activity incurs an extra charge, but we reckon the experience is well worth it!

  • Guests staying at Olakira’s north site can enjoy cultural and community visits, for example to a local school.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Access & Location

The camp is situated in the far north of the Serengeti from June to November, and is accessed via 45 minutes’ road transfer from Kogatende Airstrip. From mid-December until the end of March, it’s set up in the south, in the Ndutu region, and is approached via 20-minutes’ drive from the airstrip at Ndutu. Both locations are fabulous – the northern camp is situated close to a sweeping bend of the River Mara, while in the south guests can enjoy amazing views over sprawling plains as far as Lake Masek!

*As this is a mobile tented camp, the location will change throughout the year based on the camp’s position. Mobile tented camps relocate seasonally to follow wildlife movements. Temporary but fully serviced, mobile tented camps leave no permanent trace and offer access to remote wilderness areas far from the crowds.

These tents are also spacious, and with a pleasant airy feel. In the lounge, there’s plenty of comfortable seating around coffee and occasional tables, and the living space flows out onto the veranda to offer amazing views. A bar is also set up within the lounge, making it a great spot for relaxing between activities. The dining tent features a long table and campaign-style chairs for communal meals, which include continental or full English breakfasts, buffet lunches, and delicious three-course dinners! Guests can also opt to eat breakfast and lunch within the grounds. And the camp’s fire-pit is the place to be for pre-dinner drinks, sharing your stories of days on safari.

Guest accommodation consists of nine spacious safari tents, including one tent for family use.

The bedroom of each standard tent contains a king-size bed or twin beds, bedside stands and overhead lighting, a writing desk and chair, and a separate seating area. A snug rug or two covers the canvas floor here and there, creating a homely vibe. The washing facilities are found at the back of the tent – here you’ll find an enclosed flush toilet, a vanity unit with washbasin and mirror over, and a separate bucket shower. There’s also a storage unit, which holds a couple of colourful bathrobes. Free toiletries are provided, as is washing powder for ladies’ underwear. At the front of the tent, there’s a lovely veranda, where you can relax and enjoy your views over the river or across the plains! The family tent benefits from all the features of the standard tent, and it’s sufficiently spacious to sleep a maximum of two adults and four children.
