Guided game drives head out during early morning and late afternoon into evening, providing opportunities for guests to enjoy sightings of an exhilarating variety of wildlife! Typically drives are shared, but it’s possible to book a private vehicle at extra cost – and this is essential for families with children aged under 12 years.
You can look out for four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! If you visit Tarangire from June to October, you might well witness the park’s spectacular elephant migration, when huge herds come stomping through the area in search of water. There are plenty of smaller predators and herbivores here too, such as cheetah, hyena, jackal, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, mongoose, and an amazing assortment of antelopes.
At last count, over 500 species of bird were recorded, including ostrich, eagles, parrots, lovebirds, and the interestingly named bare-faced go-away bird!
Oliver’ Camp offers walking safaris too, during the same slots as game drives. The camp’s expert guides are highly skilled at tracking many different types of game species, as well as showing you the smaller lives of Tarangire – the plants and insects, for example.
If you’re feeling particularly adventurous you can go on a fly camping trip, walking out to a satellite camp during the afternoon in the company of a guide and sleeping under the stars!
You can also experience the park from above, on a hot air balloon ride. The balloon launches at dawn, in time for travellers to observe the gorgeous sunrise over Tarangire.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
The camp is accessed via 45 minutes’ road transfer from Kuro Airstrip. It’s set on a sandbank overlooking the floodplain of the Minyonyo Pools, just a short distance from Tarangire’s famous Silale Swamps and their wealth of wildlife!
Oliver’s Camp’s communal lounge and dining areas are housed in a two-storey open-sided timber-and-thatch structure, which links to the guest tents along neat pathways.
The lounge is located on the lower storey. It contains comfortable leather sofas and armchairs around coffee tables, a few occasional tables, and a couple of rugs for a homely feel. In the dining room, adjacent to the lounge, there’s one long table flanked by upright chairs. Everyone eats together here, tucking in to continental breakfasts with bacon-and-eggs to order, light lunches, and delicious three-course dinners. Once weekly, camp staff light up the barbecue! Guests can also eat and drink on a deck adjoining the lounge and dining areas. There’s a second deck on the upper storey, which is fantastic for viewing the local wildlife. Just in front of the communal building, you’ll find the campfire area. With its semi-circle of campaign chairs and proximity to an al fresco bar, this is the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks while sharing your safari stories!
Guest accommodation consists of ten tents, including a suite for honeymooners and a newly redesigned family tent with two en suite bedrooms .
All tents are canvas with a thatch roof, and each is raised above ground level on a wooden deck. The interiors are very spacious and airy. Every standard tent includes a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and campaign chair, a large storage unit, and a box safe. The palette is mainly neutral, with a few patterned soft furnishings such as rugs and cushions to add a little colour here and there. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin, step-up shower, and a lovely outdoor shower partly enclosed by a tall fence. Each tent also has a private veranda, where you can relax and enjoy beautiful views of the Silale Swamps and their resident elephant herds! The honeymoon tent benefits from all the features of the standard tent, except that it has a double outdoor shower. And the family tent has an additional bedroom with twin beds, as well as an extra toilet and washbasin. Triple tents are available too.
