If you visit during May or June, you can expect to see the herds of the Great Migration – thousands upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles!
Outside of May and June, wildlife viewing is still excellent and the standard of game drives is always high due to the expertise of the camp’s guides. There are hundreds of birds to observe.m
You don’t even need to leave camp to enjoy some wildlife viewing, as the surrounding plains entice plenty of herbivores. However, if you do venture out, you’ll be very well rewarded. The Singita Grumeti Reserves boast all Big Five species – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! Numerous smaller mammals are also in residence, such as cheetah, hyenas, jackals, wild dog, giraffe, eland, and kudus.
Safari walks are fantastic for anyone interested in taking a closer look at the reserves’ wildlife and birdlife, in addition to the plant life and insect life. Usually a minimum age requirement of 15 years applies to walks, but younger safarists might be permitted to join in too.
Adults and children can play tennis on the camp’s own red clay court or have a go at archery. Finally, there are lots of things for kids to do through Singita’s Mini Rangers’ Course – animal tracking, bush survival techniques, frogging, and much more besides!
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
The camp is accessed via 45–60 minutes’ road transfer from the Sasakwa airstrip. Most travellers approach the airstrip via flight from Arusha (1 hour) or Kilimanjaro (1 hour 15 minutes). Sabora is situated on the Sabora Plains within the Singita Grumeti Reserves, an area of sprawling grasslands studded with acacia trees.
The communal areas at Sabora are focused around the camp’s deck and its sparkling swimming pool.
These are the most popular places for guests to socialise and to take a refreshing dip. The deck links two large tents, one for lounging and one for dining. It too has dining and lounge areas – within the latter, a medley of well-cushioned sofas, classic campaign chairs, and pouffes surrounds a long coffee table. The bar is set up conveniently close by! Sabora’s indoor lounge features additional comfortable seating, explorer’s chests for coffee tables, a few books, and wildlife artwork. Its canvas wall is usually rolled up at the front, allowing guests to marvel at breathtaking views while taking time out to unwind. The indoor dining room contains chic separate tables and upright chairs. Either here or on the deck, guests tuck in to delicious buffet breakfasts, light lunches, afternoon teas, and lavish three-course dinners! The camp has a boutique and gallery too. Fitness fans can make good use of the gym, while any traveller in need of a little pampering can head to the spa – in-room treatments are also available.
There are nine one-bedroom tented rooms, all elevated above ground level on wooden decking.
The entrance to each tent is at the back. Once inside the tent, you’ll find a very spacious combined bedroom and lounge, decorated in a 1920s explorers’ style. The floors are covered with neutral-tone carpet, with Persian rugs adding a little colour. The bedroom area contains a four-poster double bed, bedside tables and lighting, a standing fan, an explorer’s chest, and a luggage rack. Moving to the lounge, there’s a comfy sofa or armchairs, a few floor cushions, and a coffee table laden with board games including chess and draughts. The en-suite washroom, located through a dividing wall, has a flush toilet, twin washbasins with mirrors over, and a bathtub with shower attachment. It also has a lot of storage furniture – a chest of drawers, a hanging unit with shelves, and a hat stand! A canvas door leads from this space to an outdoor shower, with joined wooden poles providing ample privacy. Complimentary toiletries are supplies, and additional amenities include a hairdryer, an internet phone, and Wi-Fi. Returning to the bedroom/lounge, guests can part the canvas walls at the front of the tent to stroll out onto a private veranda. This is set with lounge and dining furniture, and it’s perfect for relaxing and enjoying spectacular views across the plains!
