Our Safari Partners

Owned and operated by Derek and Jules Shenton, Shenton Safaris is a family-run company based in Zambia.

Established in 1992 with Kaingo Camp, the company now operates two camps in South Luangwa National Park. The Shenton family has a strong conservation legacy, as Derek’s father was one of the pioneer wardens of Zambia’s tourism industry. Derek is a third-generation conservationist and safari guide, serving on the board of Conservation South Luangwa. Jules is a zoologist, wildlife photographer, and founding member of the charitable organisation, Project Luangwa.

Shenton’s small, independent camps, Kaingo and Mwamba, are a great option for a safari in South Luangwa. Kaingo is the flagship property, overlooking the Luangwa River, and Mwamba is a small, rustic bush camp that guests can reach on foot, approximately 6 kilometres from Kaingo. In addition, the elevated Numbu Star Bed allows for a night spent stargazing on a viewing platform immersed in nature. The Shenton camps are all about the traditional under-thatch bush experience, and safari purists love them for their authenticity, friendliness, and first-rate wildlife-viewing activities.

Derek and Jules are actively involved in the running of the camps, and their presence is felt throughout, from Derek as head of operations to Jules’ photography displayed on the walls. The camps are particularly suited for wildlife photographers, as they feature several superb photographic hides. Nat Geo Wild, the BBC, and ITV have filmed from Kaingo Camp and its surrounding areas, and the BBC spent five months there filming the resident leopard Chipadzua. Conservation is key to the company’s operation, and Derek is passionate about eco-sustainable farming. An impressive 89 per cent of the produce is grown on the organic Shenton Plot. The Shentons are also significant contributors to road grading, allowing anti-poaching teams to move quickly throughout South Luangwa.
