Founded in 1999 by Jean du Plessis, Wayo Africa is one of Tanzania’s original safari operators. The company runs permanent and mobile camps in remote locations in Manyara National Park and the Serengeti, and its walking safaris were amongst the first in Tanzania. The Wayo name stands for eco-friendly tourism, down-to-earth safari camps, immersive activities, and quality wildlife guiding.

In 2022, the brand was acquired by Wilderness, further enhancing its credibility as a leading name in adventurous Tanzania safaris. Wayo’s light-footprint camps have their own water filtration plant and use solar-powered lights. They try to support the surrounding communities as much as possible by employing local staff and buying produce from nearby farms and markets. Their activities encourage guests to spend time outside the vehicle, cutting down on CO2 emissions.
Wayo delivers high-quality safaris that encourage guests to explore nature on a deeper level. Although the company does offer game drives, Wayo is more about walking safaris, biking, canoeing, and authentic cultural encounters. The walking expeditions in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area take guests into remote, undeveloped areas accompanied by experienced professional guides. The Wayo Walking Camp is an excellent choice for those seeking a true mobile camp experience, which follows the Serengeti’s great migration herds. The walking camp can also be set up in Tarangire National Park and Manyara National Park.

Wayo camps are small and relatively simple, yet well run and comfortable. They really focus on the essence of safari, ensuring guests experience the heart of the bush. The products work particularly well for safari purists seeking good value, without substituting prime wildlife locations and excellent guiding. Aside from game-viewing activities, guests can visit the local artisans who built the Wayo camps from scratch. Guests staying in Manyara National Park can also walk among the tree canopy on a unique Treetop Walkway excursion. As part of the Wilderness portfolio, Wayo helps support Children in the Wilderness – a charitable trust that facilitates sustainable conservation with scholarships and educational programmes for children.
