With just five tents, meals cooked over an open fire, and safari stories shared beneath the stars, Savute Under Canvas delivers an excellent wilderness experience in a unique and striking region. Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including three meals daily, soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers, game drives, and transfers to and from the local airstrip. The camp is closed for certain weeks in January and February each year, so please contact the Yellow Zebra team for further details.

Our Yellow Zebra Opinion
  • Great value for quality
Sister property to Chobe Under Canvas, Savute Under Canvas is located in the west of Chobe by the Savute Marsh. Known for epic lion viewing, this is an intense area and the camp is seriously fun! I absolutely love it.

Activities

Activities at &Beyond Savuti Under Canvas focus predominantly on game drives within Botswana’s wild and remote Savuti region. However, short walks are possible depending on the camp’s location, and the guides can tailor game viewing to specific interests.

Birding

  • Morning and afternoon game drives are the main activity at Savuti Under Canvas, exploring the vast Savute terrain, which covers more than 10,000 square kilometres from the northern boundary of Chobe National Park all the way to the Linyanti river. This is a mysterious, desert-like landscape interspersed with enormous baobab trees, grasslands, mopane woodland, and the lifeless camelthorn trees of the Savute Channel – keep an eye open for lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, as well as smaller predators such as cheetah, hyena, and wild dog. You’ll likely encounter plenty of giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and a fine assortment of antelopes.

  • If your stay coincides with the camp’s location near Gubatsa Hills, you can take a short guided walk to see some ancient San rock paintings of elephant, giraffe, eland, and sable. Not far from the site, there’s an avenue of enormous baobab trees – a sight to behold!

  • The Savute region supports more than 450 land and aquatic bird species, including the secretary bird, kori bustard, red-billed francolin, and, in April, impressive flocks of quelea finch. Different seasons bring various migration patterns, but ornithologists may well catch sight of a soaring bateleur eagle, a vibrantly coloured carmine bee-eater, or a gregarious pin-tailed whydah.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

There’s a help-yourself bar table, though friendly staff are always on hand to assist, and atmospheric bush dinners are frequently served outside beneath the stars, close to the campfire. Savute Under Canvas prides itself on its light sustainability footprint, which includes solar lights, bucket showers, and no electricity. Guests should be prepared to disappear off-radar for a while as there is no Wi-Fi connection at the camp and no plug sockets. Having said that, all 4×4 safari game vehicles are custom-built with 12V charging units and USB ports, so you won’t have any problem charging electronic devices.

Amenities

Savute Under Canvas has just five Meru-style guest tents with mesh windows, fly sheets, and verandas arranged with a couple of safari chairs, ideal for an early-morning coffee surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Each tent has a pair of Swarovski Optik CL Companion 8×30 binoculars for use during your stay. The en-suite facilities of each unit, accessed through a canvas partition behind the bedroom area, include a flush toilet, a jug-and-basin on top of a wooden vanity unit, and a classic bucket shower filled every evening (or on request).
