The private islands boast the best beaches in the world – pristine powder-soft pure white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Many of the beaches are home to giant tortoise! And inland, spectacular tall palms and other lush tropical plants shelter some brilliant birdlife. We recommend a stay on any of these private islands to travellers keen to experience that little piece of paradise. Less built up and less commercialised than the main islands, these islands are an ideal retreat from everyday life.
These islands are located at varying distances from the cluster that includes Mahé, Praslin and La Digue – from Cousine just 6km west of Praslin, to Desroches at 230km south-west of Mahé. All are reached via direct plane from Mahé, with the exception of Cousine – because of its fragile eco-system, this island favours transfer by helicopter or boat.

Bird Island is host to more bird species than anywhere else in the Seychelles, while on Desroches, the giant tortoises feature heavily in the kids’ club! Every island is involved in conservation – on Bird and Cousine, guests are even invited to participate in efforts to preserve wildlife.

What are the best accommodation options?
Accommodation on the private islands is truly the last word in luxury. Bird Island may prefer a practical approach, but its seaside chalets are certainly very comfortable. Elsewhere, options range from spacious suites on Desroches to charming cottages on Denis to sumptuous villas on Cousine, Fregate and North – with privacy in abundance.
