Trip Itinerary
Cape Town
For the first part of your family trip, you will fly to Cape Town! From here, you’ll head to the foothills of Table Mountain to Nicol Street Heritage Cottage, where you’ll stay for three nights. Children of all ages are welcome here! Families of up to two adults and two children are well accommodated in a two-bedroom luxury apartment. This option is individually decorated and includes a kitchen area, lounge, and bathroom, as well as amenities such as room service and satellite television. Nicol Street Heritage Cottage is a brilliant base from which to explore Cape Town. The famous Kloof Street, with its shops, restaurants, and cafés, is within walking distance, as is the city’s majestic Table Mountain. And all sorts of other excursions are possible – to the V&A, to the Two Oceans Aquarium, to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Staff at Nicol Street Heritage Cottage are happy to help you get the most out of your stay in this magical city, as part of the superb service they provide!
Hermanus
The next part of this ultimate South Africa family holiday sees you all heading to Hermanus, approximately two hours’ drive from Cape Town. Most famous for offering excellent whale watching from June to October (the best land-based whale watching in the world, apparently!), Hermanus is a relatively small coastal town with a number of bars and restaurants. When the weather is great, the region is lovely, while the water-based safaris are superb at any time of year. Hermanus itself is a good all-year destination and you’ll spend three nights at Mosaic Private Sanctuary, an adventurous property that offers a range of activities that are great for families. Overlooking a lagoon, the Mosaic Sanctuary boasts fantastic views and is well placed for visits to many local and nearby attractions, not least Panthera Africa and Shark Alley.
Madikwe Game Reserve
From Hermanus, you’ll return to Cape Town International Airport and head to Madikwe Game Reserve, where you’ll stay at Lelapa Lodge for three nights. The word Lelapa means ‘family’, and this really is a very family-oriented property. There are no age restrictions and staff do their utmost to ensure everyone feels at home. The communal areas include a very comfortable lounge and dining room, with amazing views over the reserve. There’s also a swimming pool, perfect for splashing about! The family suite category is super-comfy too, featuring cosy wood-burning fireplace, indoor and outdoor showers, and your very own plunge pool. When it comes to activities, Lelapa is pretty special. The property has an eco-house – this is an educational and entertainment centre for kids and anyone with a fascination for the wild world and its inhabitants. Other children’s activities include bush orientation, family safari drives, bug CSI, dung tracking, track pack with plaster of Paris, baking in the kitchen, making pizzas in the boma, stargazing, games night, and even washing the safari vehicle! There really is a massive amount of things to do, in this brilliant Big Five setting. And the staff are happy to look after kids while the parents go on safari or slip away for some R&R.
