&Beyond’s Serengeti Under Canvas is one of the best safari properties offering Great Migration viewing throughout the year! The park’s most luxurious and expensive mobile camp, its levels of service are superb. It moves five times a year to anticipate the movements of the wildebeest herds, and as there is only the canvas walls of your tent between you and the wildlife, it certainly promises to bring guests as close as possible to the wonders of the Serengeti.

The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including three meals daily, a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, refreshments on activities, game drives, transfers between camp and the local airstrip, and a laundry service.

  • These take place during early morning and late afternoon, with the additional option of requesting a picnic lunch and staying in the park all day. A private vehicle is made available to families, so you can pick your own safari times.

  • It can be very difficult to predict the precise movements of the migration, but &Beyond will always ensure that Serengeti Under Canvas is set up in the best spot – and expert guides are on hand to bring you the most exciting sightings. Typically the huge herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles spend the period from late December to mid-March in the Serengeti’s Ndutu region, in the south. During this time they tuck in to the sweet short grasses, with the calving season taking place for three weeks of February. Later in March, the herds head into the west of the park, though they may still be reachable from &Beyond’s southern campsite. The rutting season tends to occur through mid-April into June, and the plains echo with the sounds of male wildebeest asserting themselves! July through to early November is the famous river-crossing period, with the herds traversing first the Grumeti- and then the Mara river in their search for food.

  • There’s plenty of wildlife to see in the park, such as all Big Five in some areas – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Numerous smaller predators and herbivores abound, and there’s a lot of birdlife.

  • And if you are looking for a really special experience, we recommend enjoying a morning hot air balloon ride. The balloon launches at dawn and floats above the sweeping plains for a birds-eye view – a real treat.

  • These include stargazing, day trips to Olduvai Gorge and Shifting Sands (season dependent), and &Beyond’s WILDChild programme – kids can take part in tracking, fire-making, spear throwing, and volleyball!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Access & Location

The camp is accessed via road transfer from the local airstrip. If you travel from late December to early April, you’ll approach from Ndutu, while Seronera, Grumeti, and Kogatende are used for, respectively, mid-April to May and November to mid-December, June to mid-July, and late July to early November. However, these times are subject to change depending on the herds’ movements, so please contact us for further information.

*As this is a mobile tented camp, the location will change throughout the year based on the camp’s position. Mobile tented camps relocate seasonally to follow wildlife movements. Temporary but fully serviced, mobile tented camps leave no permanent trace and offer access to remote wilderness areas far from the crowds.

In the lounge tent, there are two seating areas, with the camp’s bar in the middle. Both areas contain well-cushioned sofas and armchairs around coffee tables or classic storage chests, and the tent is open sided so you can enjoy your views over the park while relaxing with a drink. The dining tent is open sided too, and it features chic separate tables flanked by campaign chairs. Your butler serves breakfasts and lunches here – hot and cold dishes are available for your first meal of the day, and if you’re in camp for lunch you can expect a tasty range of cold meats and salads. A three-course dinner is presented every evening around the camp’s fire-pit – this is the perfect place for getting to know your fellow travellers and sharing your Great Migration stories!

Guest accommodation consists of nine tents, including one family tent that can sleep up to two adults and two children.

All tents are Meru in style – an outer layer of canvas extends over the inner layer to create a private veranda. Set with deckchairs and a small table, the veranda is a great spot for having a drink while marvelling at the scenery! There’s even a little washbasin here too. Inside each standard tent, there’s a comfy double bed or twin beds, an additional daybed, and two storage chests, in which you’ll find a safe and a mini-bar with cooler box. Various rugs and mats cover the canvas floor, adding a homely feel. Towards the back of the tent, there’s a second washbasin and a separate flush toilet. A double bucket shower is set up outside, with hot water provided by your very own butler! The family tent benefits from all the features of the standard tent, and its two bedroom areas can be separated with netting if you wish.
