Kichaka Kidogo is a simple, seasonal fly camp in the heart of the wilderness, focusing on pure, back-to-basics exploration.

As it has just three dome-style tents, the experience is intimate, offering guests from sister camp Kichaka Zumbua the chance to walk in some of the remotest corners of Ruaha National Park. By day, head out into the bush with some of the region’s top wildlife guides, when you might look for lion tracks, stop to admire a rare bird, or cross paths with an elephant herd – each day is different. At sundown, grab an ice-cold beer and sit around the crackling campfire, gazing up at the Milky Way without a care in the world. Rates at Kichaka Kidogo are all inclusive and include accommodation, meals, a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and wildlife safari activities.

Activities

The Kichaka Kidogo experience is centred on walking safaris in the remotest, least-visited corners of Ruaha National Park.

Stargazing

  • Guided walking safaris are the primary focus at Kichaka Kidogo, with opportunities to venture well off the beaten path. Each day brings something new in the bush, as you encounter fresh animal tracks, unusual birds, a tiny lizard resting on a termite mound, or indeed the great giants of the bush, including elephant and lion. This is a chance to savour the smallest details of the ecosystem, where everything has its place.

  • Game drives are the next most popular activity, with opportunities to explore the remotest parts of Ruaha National Park. You’ll find huge elephant populations, in addition to lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. There are smaller predators too, like cheetah, serval, caracal, and the endangered wild dog. Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and various antelope species also inhabit the terrain.

  • Accompanied by spotlights and high-tech thermal imaging devices, set off into the bush for an exhilarating night game drive. The after-dark world is completely unique and offers guests the chance to seek out shyer species such as pangolin, honey badger, and civet cat. Please note, there is an additional $100 TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) fee per person.

  • Ruaha National Park is a haven for birds with almost six hundred recorded species, making it a fascinating destination for bird enthusiasts. Sightings include Bataleur eagles, Tanzanian red-billed hornbills, herons, and black-collared lovebirds.

  • With zero light pollution, Ruaha National Park is a particularly striking wilderness for stargazing. Step out onto the viewing deck each evening to witness some of the clearest star-filled night skies in Africa. The camp even has its own powerful telescope, which easily displays the rings of Saturn!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
