Activities at Mkombe’s House Lamai focus on game drives. Guests are invited to plan their days and the private guide is happy to help set a schedule.
These outings take place during early morning and late afternoon, although you can opt to go out for the whole day with a big picnic.
Guests hoping to see the Great Migration are advised to visit during the months from July to October, as it is then that the wildebeest mass on the shores of the Mara River before hurtling through the crocodile-full waters!
This is an exceedingly game-rich area of the Serengeti, with all Big Five animals in residence all year round in addition to numerous cheetah and hyena, a few wild dog, small groups of giraffe, and thousands of Grant’s gazelle, eland, impala, topi and kongoni. Hippo are also sighted in the river and the birdlife is very impressive, featuring more than 500 species – highlights are Fischer’s lovebird, Hildebrandt’s starling and the yellow-throated sandgrouse.
Walks are available, but not for children aged under 12 years. Fortunately, there is plenty to interest the little ones in the kopje around camp – lizards and hyrax, for example!
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
Set on Kogakuria Kopje above a classic Serengeti view, Mkombe House is in the far north of the Serengeti, in the Lamai wedge. To get here, guests can take an international flight into Kilimanjaro, and then a light aircraft flight from there to the northern Serengeti.
In addition to a private guide, Mkombe’s House Lamai has an in-house chef along with waiting and housekeeping staff, all dedicated to ensuring guests have a fantastic holiday. The chef discusses meals with guests and is happy to accommodate any dietary requirements, always using fresh produce. And a babysitter can be trusted to take care of the children while adults enjoy a little time to themselves!
The interiors of Mkombe’s House Lamai have been designed by Joanna Cooke, using locally sourced materials.
Overall, the style is fresh and contemporary, combining neutrals and splashes of colour. The lounge has plenty of comfy seating and is a great place to relax. The dining room has a glamorous feel and includes a long table and chairs for communal meals as well as high chairs on request. Food and drink can also be enjoyed outside, on the delightful deck overlooking the plains of the Serengeti and the Mara River. This deck incorporates a plunge pool suitable for children and a larger swimming pool for the grown-ups!
Mkombe’s House Lamai contains two en-suite double/twin bedrooms, each of which connects to a children’s room, also with en-suite facilities. Cots are available too. The bedrooms are open fronted to provide amazing views, but they can be zipped closed if preferred. The style of the bedrooms mirrors that of the living areas – lots of local materials, with beiges and creams alongside vibrant hues. Furnishings include bedside tables, a writing desk and chair, and easy chairs with cushions. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin, bath and shower.
