Best Time to Visit

The best time to travel to Zambia really depends on its two most popular activities: walking safaris with superb game-viewing, and heading to Victoria Falls, whether that is to watch the world’s largest waterfall in full flood or to take part in adventures such as white-water rafting.

As an overview, avoid traveling between December and April, when it’s the hot, rainy season, as many lodges and roads are closed. Shoulder season offers great rates and availability, but you might have to sacrifice on the quality of game-viewing as the bush can still be thick. Go in peak season, and you’ll be in the thick of the action for walking safaris, big game, and impressive highlights, but remember that this all comes at a higher price.

January

Mixed

January in Zambia is peak wet season, with heavy showers, high humidity, and hot temperatures. The lush landscape is beautiful, but dense vegetation makes wildlife harder to spot. Many roads become impassable, and most camps close. Game viewing is limited, but visitor numbers are low, offering peaceful safaris. Lower rates and intimate experiences appeal to adventurous travelers willing to navigate the challenging conditions.

Good

June

Good

June is one of the best-value months in Zambia. Game viewing improves as the bush dries out, and walking safaris begin. Nights and mornings can be cold, so warm clothing is a must. Victoria Falls is impressive, as water levels are medium to low, and the spray doesn’t impede the view. Some camps still offer shoulder-season rates, making this an excellent time to travel on a budget.

August

Best

August is peak safari season in Zambia, with dry, clear weather and excellent wildlife sightings. Predator activity increases, the dry bush improves visibility, and wildlife congregates around remaining water sources. Walking safaris are superb. Victoria Falls water levels allow visits to Devil’s Pool and Livingstone Island from around mid-month. Lodges are busy and expensive, so plan ahead to secure space in popular national parks.

September

Best

September is one of Zambia’s best months for wildlife. Big cats, elephants, and carmine bee-eaters are frequently seen. South Luangwa’s rivers draw large pods of hippo. The dry landscape allows easy spotting, but temperatures rise quickly, making midday walks difficult. It’s peak season, so there’s relatively low availability of properties and prices are high, so planning early is advised. This is also an excellent time for photography and predator viewing.

October

Best

October is Zambia’s hottest month. Scorching temperatures push animals to scarce water sources, making for exceptional game viewing. Game drives and walks shift to early and late hours to avoid the heat. Victoria Falls may dry up on the Zambian side, but Zimbabwe offers alternative views. It’s also a fantastic month for white water rafting and visiting Devil’s Pool. Some camps begin lowering rates late in the month, creating opportunities for good-value trips.

Good

November signals the start of the rains, especially in the second half of the month. Early showers begin to turn the bush green and lush, though game viewing is still decent, particularly early in the month. Many camps close mid-month, and walking safaris taper off. With fewer tourists, parks are quiet. Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls is often still accessible. The weather is unpredictable, but great value and privacy can be found.
