The Serengeti is located in northern Tanzania and forms part of the country’s renowned northern circuit. The Serengeti is the Africa that we all have in our minds – endless grass plains stretching as far as the horizon, punctuated only by the odd flat-topped acacia tree.

  • Boasting the highest concentration of predators in Africa, the Serengeti is home to truly phenomenal game. This is Big Five territory, in an authentic environment with no fences and little interruption from man. The Serengeti has one of the largest populations of lion in Africa. The Great Migration is a constant food supply and this is prime hunting territory. The big cats can often be seen on kopjes (rocky outcrops), basking in the evening light.

Elephant and buffalo herds are widespread across the plains, while leopard enjoy the riverine forests along the Seronera River. Rhino are rare, as there are only about 50 individuals in the park, whereas cheetah simply love the open savanna, especially Namiri Plains. There are over 500 species of bird, warthogs, hyena, giraffes, baboons, crocodile, and many antelope. There’s a reason the Serengeti is called ‘The Mother of all Safari Parks’!

  • The Serengeti is the main location of the Great Migration. With over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra traversing the Serengeti and Mara ecosystems throughout the year, the herds are constantly on the move and their location can be well predicted. At any time of the year, you can choose a camp in their path. From the Ndutu Plains in the south for calving season (Jan–March), they travel in a clockwise arc through the west and centre (June–July), finally reaching the Mara River for the famous river crossings (July–Oct).

The herds spend several months crossing between the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, always in search of fresh grasses. The Serengeti side tends to be the less busy because there are only a certain number of camps in the region, and a flight is needed to access it.

  • The majority of wildlife viewing in the Serengeti takes place in the form of expertly-guided 4×4 game drives. These drives take place in the early morning and again from mid-afternoon to avoid the heat of the day. This is when the animals are at their most active too. With the constant movement of so many herbivores across the land, predator–prey interactions are frequent!

Most of the big cats do their hunting at night, so it’s the very early morning start that can often be the most exciting, with action still taking place as the sun comes up. Conversely, cheetah hunt during the day to avoid competition, so they can be seen on afternoon drives looking primed. Your guide will demonstrate eyesight abilities you did not think possible as they effortlessly scan the horizon for wildlife.

  • This is often a bucket list activity! Watching the sun come up over the African plains is a memory that will live long. It’s a very early start to ensure you are airborne for sunrise. Chat to your specialist about which camps are best located for this activity. Hot air balloon safaris are available throughout the park, with most flights taking place in the eastern Serengeti.
After your dreamy sunrise flight, the experience finale is a private champagne breakfast on the plains.

  • Walking safaris have become more available in the Serengeti in recent years, with permits being given only to select operations with outstanding eco-credentials. You can get much closer to nature and learn about the minutiae of the bush, led by top guides in private wilderness areas.

Once you have done your first walking safari, you may find it thoroughly exhilarating. There is a great freedom to being on the ground and at one with your surroundings. Some companies specialise in multi-day walking adventures. All guides complete rigorous training on how to approach wildlife and are armed for your protection. You may be lucky and come across a cat with its kill, but mostly walking safaris are calmer and more about the little creatures that can be missed in a 4×4.

Where to Stay

The Serengeti is the muse of almost every safari dream – vast, timeless, and holding the greatest concentration of wildlife on Earth. It’s not just about a season; it’s alive all year. Long drives here feel like stepping back into an era of true exploration, and the magic is best lived in mobile camps, whatever their level of luxury.
