On a remote island in the eastern part of Lower Zambezi National Park, Kutali is a light footprint camp that’s reconstructed each season on the banks of the Zambezi River. It’s a simple, stripped-back bushcamp, specialising in walking and boat-based safaris, and a stay here combines perfectly with sister property, Chula Island Camp. All activities are overseen by Classic Zambia co-owner, Kyle Branch, who was instrumental in developing Zambia’s National Guide Training Program. Indeed, the guiding here is excellent, and the camp caters to specific interests, including birding, fishing, and wildlife photography. Rates at Kutali Camp are full board and include all meals, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, inter-camp transfers, and daily scheduled activities.

Our Yellow Zebra Opinion
  • Guest favourite
Perfectly complementing Tusk & Mane’s flagship property Chula, situated farther upstream, Kutali has an even more jaw-dropping location and an equally raw sense of adventure. This is a company for the adventurous, but what an exceptional property and what a great guiding team. A truly superb little camp; I absolutely love it.

Activities

The activities at Kutali Camp include game drives, boating, and walking safaris. Broadly, your activities will consist of one or a combination of the following:

Walking safaris

Canoeing excursions

Boating

Tigerfishing

Birding

Game drives

  • Walking safaris usually take place in the cooler morning hours, accompanied by expert professional guides. You’ll learn some interesting facts about the smaller species of Lower Zambezi National Park, and will no doubt come across animal spoor and fresh tracks. Please note that the minimum age for this activity is 14 years.

  • Scan the wilderness for crocs, hippos, birds, and game congregating on the banks of the Zambezi River as you cruise silently on a guided canoe excursion. The minimum age for this activity is also 14.

  • Scenic sundowners await as you begin a late afternoon boating excursion on the Zambezi River. This is prime game-viewing time too, as wildlife emerges from the hottest hours of the day.

  • Embark on a seasonal catch-and-release fishing excursion (May to November). All the equipment you’ll need is provided, including rods, reeds, tackles, and lures.

  • Marvel at the diversity of Lower Zambezi National Park’s incredible birdlife and cross different species off your list. Binoculars are a must!

  • Set off on a guided game drive, during which you might catch sight of lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, amongst many other smaller species.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
