Best Time to Visit
Known for its diversity of experiences and its varied weather conditions, South Africa has always been considered a year-round destination.
When you visit depends entirely on what you want to see and do. Our advice would be to aim for September for a wildlife safari (both Big Five and whales), December for an incredible winter-sun vacation, and April for driving through the Winelands and Garden Route.
January

January is midsummer with hot days and afternoon showers. Cape Town and the Winelands remain dry, while parks have dense vegetation, making wildlife spotting trickier. Birdwatching thrives due to migratory species. Kruger is less busy after the school vacations. KwaZulu-Natal marks the anniversaries of the historic battles at Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.
Febrary

February brings thick bush and heavy downpours. Calving season offers excellent wildlife viewing. Birders can spot crowned cranes, saddle-billed storks, and lilac-breasted rollers. Water is abundant, so animals disperse rather than gather. Cape Town enjoys dry weather with cool sea breezes despite high temperatures. Weather remains unpredictable with heavy rain possible.
March

March marks the end of the green season with lush landscapes. Easter vacations can make some areas busy and accommodation scarce. Dense bush reduces wildlife sightings in parks like Kruger. The Garden Route and KwaZulu-Natal beaches are ideal for snorkelling. Cooler temperatures mean big cats are more active during the day.
April

April in South Africa balances dry safari weather with sunny Cape days. Rainfall lessens, especially in northern and eastern reserves. Traveler numbers rise, but safari accommodation is generally available, improving later in the month. Birdwatchers enjoy migratory species preparing to depart. In Kruger, fruiting trees and falling leaves create vibrant fall colours.
May

May in South Africa offers clear, warm days with low humidity. Northern parks move toward the dry season, with wildlife sightings improving as animals cluster near water. Early mornings and evenings can feel chilly, and the bush thins, increasing visibility. School vacations start, so Kruger may book up quickly. Overall, it’s a pleasant time for safaris with good property availability.
June

June starts the dry season and is prime safari time, especially in Kruger, so book accommodation early. Cooler temperatures prevail with chilly mornings and evenings. Wildlife gathers around waterholes, great for photography. Cape Town and the Garden Route enter their wet season and may have rain, affecting seaside activities.
July

July in South Africa offers excellent game drives and walking safaris with clear visibility. It’s winter; midday temperatures are around 15°C, and nights are near freezing. Whale-watching peaks on the Western Cape coast at Plettenberg Bay and Hermanus. Many lodges book fast, so book early. Water temperatures can be a bit nippy for snorkelling, shark cage diving, and other aquatic activities.
August

August is peak safari season in South Africa, with excellent visibility and wildlife clustering near scarce water. Advance booking is essential to guarantee space. This is the best month to see the Big Five in Kruger and marine life off the Western Cape. Clear skies provide great photos. Table Mountain cable car closes this month for maintenance.
September

September is the ideal month to visit South Africa, with great safari visibility, short grasses, and animals near limited water sources. Cape Town rates rise with higher visitor numbers. Northern and eastern regions stay dry. Cool mornings and evenings, warm days. Hermanus Whale Festival takes place, celebrating southern right whales.
October

October brings the start of rains, greening reserves and beginning the birthing season for many animals. Temperatures rise throughout the month and can feel hot in some areas. It’s high season, so parks like Kruger can become busy. The Cape enjoys clear skies and beautiful floral displays. Days are generally warm but may include a few heavy rain showers that can disrupt travel plans.
November

November is warm and humid as the green season begins with increasing rainfall across many regions. Property availability improves, and prices drop in northern and eastern safari parks. Whale watching on the Cape coast is still good this month, and turtle hatching starts in the Seychelles. Wildlife sightings are good before the bush becomes dense, making it a great time for seeing young animals and predators.
December

December is a busy month, with many locals and tourists visiting for the vacations. Early booking is essential, especially for festive season stays. Wildlife spreads out more as water sources improve. Birdwatching is excellent during the peak migratory season. Rainfall increases mosquito activity. It’s a lively time to enjoy South Africa’s diverse wildlife and festive atmosphere across the country.
