Great Plains Conservation
Our Safari Partners
Great Plains Conservation is an independent safari company with a collection of exclusive luxury camps in Botswana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe.
The company was founded in 2006 by National Geographic photographers and filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, alongside Colin Bell, the former CEO of Wilderness Safaris. Great Plains properties are some of the most luxurious in Africa, yet their model is driven by sustainability and wildlife preservation. The Great Plains Foundation is dedicated to protecting and restoring Africa’s wild spaces through community and conservation efforts, including the Big Cats Initiative (BCI), which aims to reduce human–wildlife conflict and preserve land for big cats.

Great Plains Conservation is a serious contender for some of the world’s finest safari products. Instantly recognisable, the company’s camps strike the perfect balance between luxury and sophistication while remaining true to the original explorer-style safaris of a bygone era. Picture large decks made of repurposed wood, freestanding copper bath-tubs, storm lanterns, and vintage leather furniture, and you’ll start to get a sense of the aesthetic.
Great Plains camps are small and intimate, located in private reserves, and modelled on high-value, low-impact tourism. Many belong to an upper-tier Réserve-Collection and are also members of Relais & Châteaux, offering exceptionally high levels of service that never fail to impress. Meanwhile, their Explorer-Collection camps are unpretentious and more affordable, while still delivering outstanding, adventure-led wildlife experiences. Families and small groups seeking the ultimate in luxury and privacy can also choose one of the exclusive-use 2-bedroom residences, which come with dedicated vehicles and wildlife guides. In August 2025, the first of two brand-new, 3-bedroom Mpala Jena Private Villas opened on the banks of the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. The Great Plains Foundation is responsible for several large-scale projects that help conserve Africa’s natural habitats and surrounding communities. This is the company’s driving force, and it takes pride in its long-term commitment to wildlife conservation.
