Time + Tide
Our Safari Partners
One of Africa’s original safari companies, Time + Tide was first established as Norman Carr Safaris more than 70 years ago.
Norman Carr introduced the idea of taking travelers to observe and photograph local wildlife, and he established the first walking safaris in Zambia’s South Luangwa, a legacy that lives on to this day. Carr saw the importance of involving the local community, launching his first camp in partnership with the local chief, Nsefu. Time + Tide has continued to follow this ethos, promoting conservation through tourism. It’s also one of the only big companies that is still owner run. Today, the brand has a portfolio of ten luxury properties across Zambia and Madagascar, with some excellent walking safaris and a firm focus on high-quality guiding.

Time + Tide is our favorite Luangwa safari company and a fine choice for the Lower Zambezi. It typifies Zambian safaris and gives a real sense of adventure, with small, intimate camps, walking safaris, and a focus on guiding. The company also has two superb luxury hideaway lodges in Madagascar, where guests are treated to forest-to-reef safaris, including lemur trekking and diving in the Nosy Be archipelago.
As a family-owned business, the Time + Tide brand represents authenticity, hospitality, and attention to detail. Most of the camps have no more than five or six accommodations, ensuring the intimate, family feel remains intact. Personal touch and attention to detail are at the core of everything the company does, while delivering truly immersive safaris in wild settings. Its flagship property is the 4-bedroom Chongwe House in the Lower Zambezi, which is currently undergoing a complete reinvention with plans to reopen just in time for peak safari season. The Time + Tide Foundation supports local conservation initiatives, including wildlife rehabilitation, anti-poaching, and human–wildlife conflict. It also invests in local communities, focusing on female empowerment, conservation, health, and education.
