Activities

An exhilarating assortment of activities is available here, as follows:

Expertly guided game drives

Guided walks

Maasai cultural experiences

Safari bush dining

  • Drives take place during morning and afternoon, within both the camp’s private concession and Amboseli National Park. Covering over 500 square kilometers in total, both areas are characterised by savanna, woodlands, and water sources supporting a wealth of wildlife! Four of the Big Five live here – lion, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. Elephant numbers are particularly impressive, and you’ll also see numerous smaller predators and herbivores.

    daily game drives
  • Walks are enjoyed in the presence of experienced local Maasai, all keen to pass on their incredible knowledge of the region. You’ll learn about plants, insects, and even the Maasai way of life! This activity is often a good opportunity to do a little birding too – the Amboseli area boasts over 400 bird species.

    daily game drives
  • Anyone interested in the Maasai culture will really enjoy taking a trip to a local homestead. Here, you can look around the cattle-dung-and-grass huts termed manyattas, and you can purchase a few craft items.

    daily game drives
  • Camp staff are happy to arrange bush breakfasts and sundowners for you. Food is prepared using ingredients from Tortilis’s own kitchen gardens, so it’s super-fresh!

    daily game drives

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

The large lounge contains a medley of well-cushioned wood-framed chairs and leather pouffes around coffee tables and classic explorer’s chests, as well as the bar with its line of stools and friendly atmosphere! Adjacent to this space is the dining area, featuring leather-back upright chairs, chic tables, and some wonderful wildlife artwork. The structure is open fronted, so guests can relax and dine while marvelling at views that, in clear conditions, include Mount Kilimanjaro! The camp also offers a variety of spa treatments, such as massages and mani-pedis. From the main building, another well-marked path leads down to a fire-pit with safari chairs and cushioned stone seating – the perfect place for pre-dinner drinks and swapping safari stories. And there’s a spacious swimming pool in the shade of palm trees and the Acacia tortilis after which the camp is named. In the pool area, you’ll enjoy inviting sunloungers, board games, bar service, and sightings of some brilliant birdlife!
