Best Time to Visit
Mozambique has a subtropical climate, where the dry, winter season is between May and October, and the hot, rainy season lasts from December to March.
For the best sea life viewing, aim for June to October for the humpback whale migration season or November to December for the turtle nesting season. If it’s pure post-safari beach bliss you’re after, May and June are ideal, as you’ll have perfect conditions for sunbathing, scuba diving, and fishing. However, as Mozambique is easily accessed from South Africa, school vacations attract a lot more visitors, so it’s best to avoid the half-terms and end-of-year breaks.
January

January is hot, humid, and rainy in Mozambique, with a chance of cyclones in southern areas. Safari spots may be crowded early in the month due to school vacations. Despite the wet weather, turtle nesting season peaks along the coast, offering amazing wildlife moments. Northern regions tend to stay wet longer than the south. Not ideal for safaris, but rewarding for photographers and nature lovers.
February

February is one of the rainiest months in Mozambique, with high humidity and occasional cyclones. While conditions may feel uncomfortable, the rewards include warm seas for diving, excellent birdwatching, and turtle nesting on the beaches. Safari and beach lodge availability is good, with no need to book early. It’s a low-season month, ideal for travelers seeking wildlife and marine encounters without the crowds.
March

March is the end of the wet season, with rainfall tapering off and humidity decreasing. Rain falls in shorter bursts and coastal areas are great for diving and snorkelling. Turtle nesting continues, offering special photo opportunities. Easter can affect accommodation availability, so early booking is wise. It’s a quieter month with good value at beach resorts and the chance to enjoy nature without peak-season crowds.
April

April marks Mozambique’s transition to dry season, especially in the south. Beaches become more appealing as skies clear, and coastal waters are excellent for snorkelling and diving. Turtle nesting is still possible, and photography conditions improve with better light. Easter can bring a surge in bookings, especially in the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos. Northern areas may still experience lingering rain, but overall conditions are improving.
May

May kicks off Mozambique’s dry season with clear skies, calm waters, and lush post-rain landscapes. Beach conditions are superb, particularly on the Quirimbas and Bazaruto archipelagos. It’s a top month for diving and marine encounters. Safari lodges fill up quickly around the May half-term, so advance booking is recommended. The Azgo arts festival in Maputo adds cultural vibrancy for those heading inland.
June

June is a top month to visit Mozambique. Dry season is in full swing, bringing calm seas, clear skies, and cool evenings. Humpback whales begin migrating up the coast. Diving and fly fishing are at their best, with the chance to catch tuna, barracuda, and wahoo. With school vacations starting late in the month, early booking is advised. Excellent for wildlife, beaches, and marine adventures.
July

July is peak dry season and a superb time for both safaris and beach vacations in Mozambique. Clear skies and warm days make for excellent photos and wildlife sightings. Humpback whales are a highlight, while diving and fishing conditions are ideal. Nights can be cool, so pack warm layers. Summer vacations make this a busy month, so be sure to book properties well in advance.
August

August is one of Mozambique’s best months for coastal and marine activities. Dry, warm days and calm seas set the stage for dolphin-spotting and whale-watching; humpbacks are plentiful. School vacations mean higher demand, so early reservations are important. Fishing is excellent, with the sailfish season at its peak. While evenings can still be cool, daytime beach and water activities are at their finest.
September

September combines peak whale watching, superb diving, and fewer crowds as school vacations end. It’s warm and dry, ideal for beaches and snorkelling – there’s even a chance of swimming with whale sharks. Nights can be cool, but days are bright and sunny. Photography conditions are excellent, with clear skies and soft light. One of the best months for relaxed, scenic travel across Mozambique’s coast.
October

October is the end of the dry season and one of the hottest months in Mozambique. It’s perfect for enjoying the beach and bush, if you can tolerate the heat. Turtle breeding begins, and diving conditions are exceptional in clear, calm waters. Photography is especially rewarding along the coast. Humidity and mosquitoes rise later in the month, so be prepared with repellent and light clothing.
November

November brings the start of the rainy season. It’s hot, humid, and changeable, though generally calm for beach activities. Turtles begin nesting along the coast, and birdlife becomes more active as landscapes turn green. Diving is still excellent, and while the whale season ends, some late sightings are possible. A quieter month with lower rates and lush conditions that appeal to wildlife and photography enthusiasts.
December

December marks the full onset of Mozambique’s green season. Expect lush, photogenic landscapes, great birding, and active turtle nesting along the coast. Diving and snorkelling are exceptional, with whale sharks and manta rays sometimes spotted. Beach lodges book out quickly around Christmas, so early reservations are key. Rain tends to fall in the afternoons, leaving mornings free for exploration, beach time, and water activities.
