Special, but not for everyone
Absolutely outstanding! What an area, what a cool camp and what an experience overall. Very few people bother going to this region, but for sheer adventure and wow factor to the experience this is one of Tanzania’s true highlights.

Activities in this area are focused on walking and we would argue that the best walks in Africa happen here. Yes, you don’t get big game, but that is not the purpose of a walking safari – it is very rare to see cats and you don’t want to bump into anything bigger! It is all about the scenery and learning about the little things that you normally miss on drives. Lake Natron certainly delivers this!
You do see the occasional wildebeest, zebra, and the rarer gerenuk, but the real animal highlight is the enormous number of lesser flamingos that breed in the lake.
From November through to April , there can be approximately 2.5 million flamingos mating!
Walking along the shoreline will get you to the fossilised footprints of the Homo sapiens that traveled through the volcanic ash over 120,000 years ago. We would recommend that everyone climbs Ol Doinyo Lengai. You leave during the night and hike up the active volcano, getting to the top just before sunrise. On a clear day you can see not only Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley but also Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater, and other surrounding volcanoes.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

The main area consists of a Bedouin-style tent, underneath mesh net to ensure that guests keep cool.
It is decorated in an informal manner, with hammocks, substantial cushions and sumptuous Persian rugs. However, there is also a long table for dining. Not far from camp, there is a spring leading into a soda lake that forms a natural swimming pool!
The camp has ten guest tents, named ‘Bedu shade’ tents. These are designed and patented by the owner/director of the camp. A wide mesh net covers the accommodation, guaranteeing shade and encouraging fresh breezes. All tents boast full-size beds with high-quality bedding, lounge area with table and directors’ chairs, en-suite facilities comprising compost toilet and shower, and private path to the soda lake.
