I literally cannot get enough of Alex Walker’s Kakessio! With access to remote wild tribes, the Rift Valley escarpment, and also the game-rich Ndutu plains, Kakessio will always be my favorite Serengeti mobile. Simply outstanding.

  • The quality of guiding really lifts the experience of being in this thrilling part of the world. All the guides are exceptionally knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions. One of the many fab things about Serian is that every visiting group, to any of the properties, has exclusive use of a safari vehicle together with a dedicated spotter and guide! This brings a lot of freedom. You can decide exactly where you would like to go and whether you wish to head out during the morning, afternoon, or evening – or for a full day, with a picnic!

  • During the calving season, the short-grass plains provide a home for thousands upon thousands of wildebeest and zebra – with plenty of predators in their wake.

  • Cheetah are particularly prolific, prowling around the herds of herbivores on the alert for opportunities to seize an easy meal! Other species in the area include hyena, jackal, and honey badger. The birdlife is pretty impressive too, with hundreds of species such as the smart secretary bird and the rare Fischer’s lovebird and gray-crested helmet-shrike.

  • As well as the Serengeti, guests can check out the Ndutu region and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Both boast a wealth of wildlife and are certainly worth a visit while you are here!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Access & Location

The camp is pitched in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and boasts amazing views across the short-grass plains. Plenty of cool shade is provided by majestic acacia trees.

*As this is a mobile tented camp, the location will change throughout the year based on the camp’s position. Mobile tented camps relocate seasonally to follow wildlife movements. Temporary but fully serviced, mobile tented camps leave no permanent trace and offer access to remote wilderness areas far from the crowds.

One side contains the lounge, with lots of comfy chairs, plush sofas, a few plump pouffes, a chunky coffee table, a selection of books, floor cushions, snug rugs… and a telescope for viewing passing wildlife! The other side is home to Serengeti South’s dining area, which has a large round table surrounded by directors’ chairs. The bar is situated between the lounge and dining areas. Outside, the fire pit is a short distance from the mess tent, and there are a few further seating spaces dotted around the site, perfect for relaxing and enjoying those breathtaking vistas over the plains!

Service back at camp is also excellent, with staff members providing a lovely home from home. Surrounded by nature, you will feel very ‘Serian’, which in Maasai means ‘serene’! Dining is hosted – sometimes by Alex himself – and life in this comfortable camp is a world apart from the hustle and bustle of everyday existence. Electricity is provided by a generator, but there is no Wi-Fi connection. The emphasis lies on nature – and on a seriously impressive scale!
