Gorilla Trekking
At Yellow Zebra, we believe travel should move you, and few experiences capture this quite like gorilla trekking in Uganda. It’s a deeply humbling encounter with one of our planet’s most endangered species in their untouched natural habitat.
Nestled in the emerald embrace of Uganda’s mist-shrouded mountains, the dense rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offer a sanctuary for more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The very name Bwindi means ‘impenetrable’ or ‘a place of darkness’, and as you trek beneath towering trees, across vine-clad valleys, and over fern-carpeted hills, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a forgotten, prehistoric world.

What to expect on a gorilla trek

Your journey begins in the early morning, as mist lingers between the ancient trees and the sounds of the forest stir to life. Led by expert rangers and trackers, whose knowledge and passion protect these magnificent creatures, you’ll follow the traces of a gorilla family – a bent branch here, a fresh dung pile there, the distant echo of a low, rumbling grunt. And all while learning about the family history of the group and the current dynamics.
That heart-stopping moment when you find yourself mere meters away from a silverback and his family is profound and primal. A deep, intelligent gaze meets yours. Time slows. The world falls silent but for the rustle of leaves and the soft breathing of these giants. Watching playful youngsters tumble through the undergrowth, protective mothers cradle their young, and the dominant silverback preside with quiet authority is a privilege so rare it leaves an indelible mark on all who witness it.

Where to stay for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

There are several accommodation options for those looking for somewhere special to stay during their gorilla-trekking experience. The following are some of the Yellow Zebra experts’ favorite lodges. Located within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Buhoma Lodge is a hugely characterful mid-range property, where it’s not unusual to see gorillas wandering through the grounds. We’d also highly recommend Nkuringo Lodge, which is located at the southern edge of Bwindi Forest National Park and offers stunning views of the Virunga Mountains and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
Chameleon Hill Lodge is a characterful and quirky lodge located on the shores of Lake Mutanda, between the Bwindi and Mgahinga national parks. So, it’s the ideal stay for those who want to experience the two different parks. For those trekking in Mgahinga National Park, you can’t go wrong with Mount Gahinga Lodge. It’s a superb base for visitors who would like to add exceptional hiking in the Virunga Volcano Range to their gorilla-trekking vacation. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is a more up-scale option. This property has a fabulous location on a hilltop, 2,000 meters above sea level, with sweeping views over Bwindi and the Virunga Volcano Range.
