These take place during early morning and late afternoon, in the company of a knowledgeable and experienced guide. The sprawling savanna, woodlands, floodplains, and waters of the Lower Zambezi are home to a real wealth of wildlife! You can look out for four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – in addition to hyena, jackal, wild dog, wildebeest, zebra, antelopes, Nile crocodile, and hippo.
Also enjoyed with a guide, this activity provides sightings of all sorts of nocturnal species, not least civet, genet, porcupine, and giant eagle owl!
Walking appeals to travelers interested in observing the smaller things on safari – the plants, insects, and brilliant birdlife. Often there are opportunities to track big game too! Please note, the minimum age requirement for walks is 15 years.
The Lower Zambezi boasts approximately 500 types of feathery friend, making it a dream destination for birders! Among the park’s many highlights are rufous-bellied heron, saddle-billed stork, Jameson’s firefinch, and some vibrant bee-eaters!
A canoe guide accompanies safarists on an excursion along the Chifungulu Channel, for some wonderful wildlife viewing from a different perspective. Full-day trips, with a stop for picnic lunch, are highly recommended!
This is another thrilling way in which to see wildlife in the water, particularly elephant, hippo, crocodile, and waterbirds. You can book sundowner trips too, for gorgeous scenes of the sun setting over the park.
Both these activities are offered on a catch-and-release basis only. The camp regularly witnesses catches of tigerfish and tilapia, especially during September to November, when the waters are at their lowest levels all year.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
The camp is accessed via 40 minutes’ boat transfer from Jeki airstrip in the Lower Zambezi National Park. It’s situated in the central region of the park, adjacent to the confluence of the mighty River Zambezi and the Chifungulu Channel, with an immense sausage tree nearby.
Guest accommodation consists of seven suites, positioned well apart along the banks of the river and in the shade of sausage and mahogany trees.
Each occupies a generously proportioned tent, accommodating up to two adults. The camp also offers a two-bedroom house, Kigelia House, which can sleep up to four adults. The suite option features a king-size bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a seating area with leather sofas, a mini-bar, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, twin washbasins, bathtub, and outdoor shower. Just outside, there’s a spacious private veranda, where you’ll find additional seating, your very own plunge pool with sunloungers alongside, and amazing views over the river! Kigelia House benefits from all these features, as well as a second en-suite bedroom and an open-plan lounge/dining area. And a muchinda, a private butler, is on hand throughout your stay, to see to your every need.
Sausage Tree Camp’s communal lounge, dining area, and bar are housed in a large open-sided structure on the banks of the beautiful river. The lounge contains comfortable leather sofas around a coffee table, a tea-and-coffee station, elegant lighting, and a cozy corner fireplace. In the dining area, chic wooden tables-and-chairs are set up in readiness for delicious meals, conveniently close to the camp’s well-stocked teak bar! Guests can also opt to relax and dine on the deck or within their accommodation, all the while marvelling at the mighty River Zambezi. There’s even a telescope here, so you can get a really good look at the local wildlife. Wi-Fi is available too. And next to the river is the 25 meters lap pool, perfect for cooling off between trips into the Lower Zambezi N.P.
