Arusha

Your trip begins in Arusha, the gateway to safari in Tanzania. Upon arrival, you’ll be met at the airport and transferred to Arusha Coffee Lodge. This is one of our favourite stays in Arusha for a relaxing stopover before your safari kicks off. Here, enjoy the fantastic service and tranquil atmosphere. If time permits, take part in tours of the coffee estate, treatments in Peaberries spa, and trips into Arusha city.

Serengeti National Park

A three-night stay at Wilderness Usawa puts you at the heart of the Serengeti, navigating its most active wildlife areas while ensuring the camp is far from any crowds. This intimate mobile camp has only a few guests and staff, so there is a genuine feeling of remoteness and an ‘on-the-ground’ connection to the wild. Each day begins with full immersion as you unzip your sunrise-facing tent to the scenes of the bush, the sounds of the dawn chorus, and the scent of breakfast over a woodfire. Experiencing the Serengeti often involves long hours in a vehicle, but Usawa’s sites in designated walking zones allow you to swap game drives for bush walks in which you’ll get a grounded perspective on the varied landscapes. Accompanied by your professional guide, you’ll walk straight from camp during the cool early morning hours and end the day with sunset cocktails before a hearty bush supper and stargazing by firelight. Ever-mobile to follow the herds, the camp shifts across key locations in the Serengeti to ensure you are always close to the migration, yet isolated from busier sections of the park.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

You’ll continue your safari with three nights at Wilderness Mara, a reimagination of the iconic Little Governors’ Camp. Now rebuilt with an ethical, modern approach, the camp’s stand-out features are its prime location at the gate of the Mara Triangle and its rare access to both sides of the Mara River. The camp is sheltered by a dense riverine forest canopy, where you can hear the rush of upstream rapids while looking over the calm water and a nearby heronry that draws wallowing wildlife. As you leave the forest, the landscape unfolds onto the Mara plains, where the Oloololo Escarpment is a photographer’s dream. The area is well known for its lion prides and black rhino sightings, while elephants descend from the escarpment for late morning respite from the heat. As the camp is located right next to the Mara’s hot air balloon launch site, you can soar high above the plains at sunrise, and still enjoy short 25-minute drives to the major Great Migration crossing points without losing any game-viewing time.

Overview & Activities

This seven-night journey takes you to some of the most rewarding corners of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem for game viewing. You’ll begin in the Western Serengeti’s Grumeti region, a critical corridor for the southward-moving Great Migration herds, before crossing into the Maasai Mara, where wildlife sightings often include lion, rhino, leopard, huge elephant herds, and rare migratory birds.

While the Wilderness Mara focus is on traditional game drives with access to both sides of the Mara River, Wilderness Usawa’s remote position in the Serengeti allows you to trade drives for guided bush walks. Hot air balloon excursions are available at both locations, with the Mara stay offering the distinct advantage of being situated a stone’s throw from the launch site. For travellers with a special interest in photography, birding, or stargazing, each day is tailored to how you’d like to spend your time.

Expert quote

“The Serengeti–Mara ecosystem spans 350 km, offering dramatic landscapes shaped by the Great Rift and volcanic activity, with diverse flora, fauna, and cultures. Wildlife moves freely despite natural and behavioural boundaries, while each park presents unique experiences – from the Maasai Mara’s consistent wildlife and permanent lodges to the Serengeti’s vast wilderness and mobile camps. Both parks can be visited independently, but combining them enriches any safari with variety, depth, and cultural nuance without feeling repetitive.” – Andrew van den Broek

Location of Wilderness Usawa throughout the year

Wilderness Usawa is a truly mobile camp, relocating throughout the year to track the mega-herds of the Serengeti’s Great Migration while avoiding the crowds.

July to October: From July to October, the camp alternates between the scenic Northern Hills and Lamai, focusing on the Great Migration river crossings. These sites are a secluded alternative to the congested Kogatende area, utilising elevated viewpoints over the plains. An additional highlight is access to key rhino zones, increasing the possibility of rare sightings far from the safari crowds. The Lamai Wedge has fewer camps and fewer vehicles in general, allowing for a more private experience of the famous crossing points. Here, you can literally stand with one foot in Tanzania and the other in Kenya, while witnessing herds thundering towards you!

December to February: The fertile Southern Plains are full of life during calving season, which also attracts peak predator action. Between December and April, the camp shifts to this area away from the busier Ndutu region, where the landscape transforms into open plains, kopjes, and acacia woodlands. This area is excellent for game viewing, walking safaris, and frequent cheetah sightings.

April to July & November to June: From April to July and again from November to June, the camp moves to the Serengeti’s Western Corridor, a vital migratory route along the Grumeti River. As a permanent water source, the river attracts massive herds, predatory lions, and vibrant birdlife to a diverse landscape of rolling hills, riverine forests, and open savanna. Highlights include the Grumeti River crossings away from the more crowded central area, and sightings of black and white colobus monkeys, leopard, cheetah, and the rare black rhino.

Great for honeymoons

This itinerary is fantastic value for honeymooners, with Wilderness offering a 50% discount on accommodation for one spouse, combinable with their “Stay longer, Pay less” offer. Special touches for two might include a lantern-lit dinner on the Serengeti plains and a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Maasai Mara followed by champagne on ice.
