Vehicle safaris are ideal for exploring the Grumeti area, with Asanja’s guides on hand to provide information about every species encountered and to answer all your questions.
If you visit at the time the Great Migration storms through, usually during June and July, you can witness dramatic scenes of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles crossing the great Grumeti river, which boasts a very healthy crocodile population! However, wildlife highlights abound even outside the Great Migration months.
Four of the Big Five are in residence – lion, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. There are also smaller predators such as cheetah, spotted hyena, jackal, and wild dog, in addition to herbivores such as giraffe, eland, topi, and many other antelopes. The river contains hippo too. Birds are prolific, with raptors, waterbirds, and songbirds all well represented.
For a bird’s-eye view of the action, you can take a hot air balloon ride, launching at dawn and descending to a lavish champagne breakfast!
Fly camping is available as well, as are village visits and day trips to Lake Victoria and the Ngorongoro Crater – well worth considering if you are here for at least three nights and keen to check out other regions.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
The camp is situated in the Grumeti area of the Serengeti , within the park’s western corridor. It can be accessed via road transfer from the Grumeti airstrip, just 20 kilometres from the campsite. Asanja Grumeti has a secluded location within woodlands and is a short distance from the famous Grumeti river, which forms part of the Great Migration route.
Asanja Grumeti’s communal lounge and dining areas are housed in another ‘Meru-variation’ tent, this time fully open sided to make the most of the spectacular views! Again, the tent is set up on a wooden deck, with steps to one side.
The lounge area features comfortable sofas, armchairs, and pouffes around a coffee table, while the dining area has chic separate tables and campaign chairs. Between these spaces, there’s a small square bar with a couple of barstools. The general effect is nicely uncluttered, and guests can dine on the deck too. For special dinners, staff members will happily set you up in a pleasant spot within the gardens. Finally, the site boasts a smashing little fire-pit, perfectly placed to provide amazing vistas over the plains!
There are three guest tents.
Each is a variation on the Meru style, in that it has three rather than two layers of canvas – this design provides additional shade and privacy. Every tent is mounted on a wooden deck, and a few steps to one side lead up onto the veranda, which is set with a small dining table and a couple of campaign chairs. Inside, there’s a four-poster double bed or twin beds, bedside tables or stands and lighting, a writing desk and chair, a seating area, and ample storage space for clothes and other belongings. The en-suite facilities are found at the back of the tent – they comprise flush toilet, washbasin, and outside shower.
