With a wealth of experience in safaris that are off the beaten track, and three excellent locations that take you well away from the busier areas of the Serengeti, Wayo Little Green offers a well-priced, intimate camp that follows the path of the Great Migration. This is a slightly more basic offering compared to its sister option Wayo Serengeti Green, but the locations are just as good, and the guiding still top notch. With access granted to places along the Great Migration’s route that are not open to everyone due to the company’s fine eco-credentials, you have swathes of the Serengeti just for you!

The uniquely designed tents give you a fully immersive experience with the bush and the stars, and you will be surprised at the levels of comfort given the basic nature of the camp. And if you haven’t done a walking safari before, there’s nothing else quite like it. You will see and appreciate things that you can’t in a vehicle. It’s a chance to really connect with the wild – an amazing way to see the Serengeti from a totally different perspective. But with walking and game driving both on offer here, you can choose which activity you feel like doing the night before. Walks can be half days, or full days if you’d like to go farther, with the route looping back so you arrive back at camp in time for sundowners by the campfire! Wayo Little Green Camp offers a magnificent, unforgettable experience and gets you closer to the Great Migration than you thought possible. This is simple, intimate, epic safari – arguably just as it should be!

  • Consistently great
If you want to be fully immersed in the bush, get away from the crowds and do some fantastic safari walking, this is the camp for you! It’s incredibly rare to have such extensive access on foot to these migration areas, so that really sets this camp apart.

Activities

The camp is always well placed to offer some of the best game viewing of the Great Migration. Game driving and awesome walking adventures are both possible at this camp. Due to the unique nature of this safari experience (not many operators can offer walking in the Serengeti!), we recommend chatting with one of our specialists who has been here, so you can get the lowdown on exactly what to expect. But here is an outline:

Walking Safaris

Expertly Guided Game Drives

  • Typically guests walk approximately 10 kilometres per day, on terrain that can be uneven and/or rocky – so bring great boots! On all walks you are accompanied by an armed ranger from the National Park, as well as your guide from Wayo.

You’ll start out at about 6:30am, following a light breakfast. Accompanied by a highly knowledgeable and experienced guide, you’ll move stealthily through a southern, central, or northern region of the Serengeti, tracking the huge herds of the Great Migration and enjoying sightings of many other species of wildlife.

Visitors to the southern location can observe the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles grazing on the short-grass plains, with calving taking place during two or three weeks of February. The herds then enter the Central Serengeti for the rutting season, a rowdy time to be in the park! Finally, they push up into the north in their search for fresh grassland.

Depending on your location, wildlife species you can expect to see include plenty of big cats, humongous herbivores such as rhino, elephant, and buffalo, in addition to lots of smaller mammals. As well as animal tracking and the park’s phenomenal birdlife, walking is a great chance to take a closer look at the park’s insects and plant life.

Walking Safaris, Wayo Serengeti Green Camp, Serengeti, Tanzania
  • Two game sessions per day are offered, during morning and late afternoon. It is possible to do a full-day trip and go farther into the park, if another couple wishes to join (just in terms of vehicle numbers and availability). Among the highlights are lion, elephant, hyena, and buffalo. You can look out for smaller predators such as jackal, serval, and civet, while the large herbivore collection features giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and an assortment of antelopes.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Access & Location

Wayo Serengeti Green Camp is located in the northern Serengeti between July and October and the southern Serengeti from December to March. The north location sits quietly just to the east of Tabora inside the park, whereas the south location is just to the east of the Kusini kopjes. Both camps are accessed by light aircraft to Serengeti South or Kogatende, followed by a short 4×4 game drive transfer.
