Wayo Serengeti Green Camp is one of the best-value bush camps we’ve visited anywhere in East Africa. Based at two excellent locations, well away from the busier tourist areas, the main highlights here are the Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration and remote walking safaris designed to veer well off the beaten path. The southern plains are accounted for between December and March during calving season, and the camp moves north during the dry season for the famous Mara river crossings that usually gain traction around June. As an authentic, adventurous bush camp serving up pared-down comfort, warm hospitality, and very good guiding in lesser-explored parts of the Serengeti, Wayo Serengeti Green Camp is a great option. Rates are full board and include accommodation, meals, drinks (beers, wine, local spirits), and scheduled activities.

Cultural trips & mountain biking

  • Experience the beauty of the Serengeti ecosystem on foot, accompanied by an expert guide, for a chance to learn about the resident plant life, grasses, insects, and incredible diversity of birdlife. Short walks take place from camp, accompanied by a Serengeti park ranger, and full-day walks are possible with the addition of a private vehicle. Walking safaris are a unique feature of Wayo Serengeti Green Camp, taking precedence over game drives.

  • There are two daily game drives, during the morning and the late afternoon. As the camps are located right in the center of the migration, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to wildlife. Among the highlights of the Serengeti are lion, elephant, hyena, and buffalo. Look out for smaller predators as well, including jackal, serval, civet, honey badger, and the rare wild dog. The large herbivore collection includes giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and an assortment of antelopes.

  • Soar into the sky with a hot air balloon and prepare to be completely awed by the Serengeti from an aerial viewpoint. Please note that this activity must be pre-booked at an additional cost, so do speak to the Yellow Zebra team for further details.

  • Visit the local village of Mto Wa Mbu and meet the locals and see their way of life: always a rewarding thing to do. This is located a short drive just outside the park near the main gate. You can chat with the staff at camp about when is the best time to do this. It is also possible to rent bikes and do this on two wheels if you’d like to since you’re outside the park boundary.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Access & Location

Wayo Serengeti Green Camp is located in the northern Serengeti between July and October and the southern Serengeti from December to March. The north location sits quietly just to the east of Tabora inside the park, whereas the south location is just to the east of the Kusini kopjes. Both camps are accessed by light aircraft to Serengeti South or Kogatende, followed by a short 4×4 game drive transfer.

*As this is a mobile tented camp, the location will change throughout the year based on the camp’s position. Mobile tented camps relocate seasonally to follow wildlife movements. Temporary but fully serviced, mobile tented camps leave no permanent trace and offer access to remote wilderness areas far from the crowds.

There’s an open-sided mess tent with a homely lounge, bar, and dining area, but plenty of time at Wayo Serengeti Green Camp is spent around the campfire in the spirit of all great explorer safaris. Hearty meals are often cooked over an open fire and served outside under the stars against the warm glow of paraffin lamps. While the camp offers everything required for a comfortable bush camp stay, the emphasis here is on adventure and expedition, with game viewing and remote walks taking center stage.

Guest accommodation at Wayo Serengeti Green Camp consists of ten cozy, explorer-style mobile tents with views straight from your bed through zip-up floor-to-ceiling mesh. Simple yet perfectly comfortable, the interiors feature a king-sized or twin bed/s, bedside tables with reading lamps, a writing desk, day beds, hanging storage space, and luggage racks. The design involves local craftsmanship, with bed panels made from banana leaves, Maasai belted cushions, and Chaga cup chandeliers. The overhanging roof provides a shaded veranda space and a seating arrangement ideal for relaxing with an early morning coffee and enjoying the views. At the back of each tent, an en-suite washroom, separated by a zip door, includes twin washbasins, a flush toilet, and a bucket shower where hot water is provided on request. Additionally, a canvas wash basin stands outside the tent and is filled with warm water each morning. The camp supplies basics such as soap, shampoo, and conditioner.
