Our Safari Partners

Remote Africa is a family-run safari operator with five intimate, informal camps located in secluded locations across Zambia’s Luangwa Valley.

Founder John Coppinger started out as a guide for Robin Pope at Nsefu Camp. Together with his wife Carol, they built their first camp, Tafika, and expanded the business, which now employs approximately a hundred staff members. The company supports various community and conservation-led initiatives through the Tafika Fund. It rebuilds the camps each year, using natural materials, preserving the ecosystem, and employing a predominantly Zambian workforce.

Remote Africa is ideal for safari purists who seek comfortable, low-key bush camps and adventurous activities in truly remote wild settings. This is a family-run business. The rustic camps have a homely feel, meals are usually enjoyed communally, and everything is centred on giving guests an authentic wilderness experience. The company’s ethos has always been to build camps with local materials and to utilize local skills as much as possible, so everything feels truly homegrown. The emphasis is on disconnecting, and aside from Tafika, the camps don’t have Wi-Fi. Instead, visitors can expect open-air showers, sleep-outs (on request), roaring campfires, and armchair wildlife viewing.

Walking safaris led by highly trained professional guides are an activity highlight here – almost all the wildlife guides are from the immediate area and have received their training from scratch. Additionally, guests can choose from a range of special interest itineraries, including photography, birding, and cycling. Remote Africa takes sustainable tourism seriously, striving to preserve the natural environment as much as possible with minimal impact. Besides the company’s own Tafika Fund, the causes it supports include Conservation South Luangwa, the Zambian Carnivore Program, and the North Luangwa Conservation Program.
