Tagatha Lorentz

Raised barefoot in the Okavango Delta, Tagatha grew up exploring Africa’s top safari destinations, building a deep love for the wilderness. Today, she’s turned her lifelong passion into her profession as a Southern African safari specialist.

Tagatha’s Recent Travel Experience

Tagatha recently enjoyed a two-week trip across Kenya that made the most of the country’s wonderfully varied landscapes. She spent a week in the Masai Mara watching the migration and all the incredible wildlife Kenya has to offer – including waking up one morning to see a newborn hippo riding on its mother’s head in the river right in front of camp. The adventure continued with a week in Lamu, swimming with dolphins, having a lunch of freshly caught fish on a tiny remote island, watching the New Year’s Day dhow races, and drinking a few too many sunset Dawa cocktails. As you can imagine, it remains one of her favorite trips so far.
Tagatha feels incredibly lucky to have recently spent four days in Rwanda, including three unforgettable days spent trekking with the Kwitonda family of mountain gorillas. Finding the same family three days in a row gave an amazing insight into how these gorillas operate within their family structures, with the added bonus of a very active (and very cute) infant gorilla.
Tagatha’s Most Memorable Experience

“After a lifetime of traveling Africa, it’s nearly impossible to narrow it down to one favorite, but I will say that spending three days trekking with the Kwitonda family of mountain gorillas in Rwanda is something I doubt I could ever forget. We were incredibly lucky to find this family three days in a row, which allowed us to understand so much about how these amazing creatures operate in their family structures. The family included a very young infant gorilla who was absolutely fascinated by us and came out each time to watch us from nearby branches, only to lose its balance each time it tried to stand up and fall back into its mothers arms – and then do it all over again! They really made us work for it, trekking for hours in mud up to our hips, but it was absolutely worth it and will stick with me forever.”

Tagatha’s Bio
Tagatha was born into a safari family in Botswana and spent her childhood barefoot in the Okavango Delta, falling in love with the wilderness. She grew up between her parents’ two lodges – Abu Camp and Sandibe – and spent her early years traveling across Africa, working at various camps as a teenager and experiencing some of the continent’s most beautiful and remote corners.
After finishing school, Tagatha headed to the Cape Winelands for her studies, before embarking on a steady stint of globe-trotting, from ski seasons in Aspen to backpacking through South America and Asia. She later earned her Master’s degree in Dublin and went on to spend nearly five years immersed in the world of finance, writing about the US stock market.
However, as they say, you can take the girl out of Africa, but you can’t take Africa out of the girl. After years of convincing anyone who’d listen that Africa is the ultimate adventure, Tagatha finally decided to swap the blazer and high heels for walking boots and binos – returning to her roots in safari. She joined Yellow Zebra in 2025 to help others discover the magic of Africa, just as she did growing up.
