Moremi Crossing offers some superb safari activities. The availability of many of these depends on water levels, as indicated with an asterisk in the list below. Please note, there’s a minimum age requirement of 12 years for walks and mokoro excursions.
These take place on Chief’s Island, which is located just north of camp. Chief’s is the largest island in the Delta, measuring 70 by 15 kilometres. It’s made up of sprawling plains and abundant woodlands. All Big Four are in residence – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! There are numerous smaller predators and herbivores too, such as cheetah, hyena, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and all sorts of antelopes. As well as looking out for the big game, you can take time to concentrate on the island’s plants, insects, and vibrant birdlife.
This activity is fantastic for getting to know the wildlife of the waters. You’ll explore the Boro river, spotting hippos, crocodiles, and a wealth of waterbirds, not least jacana, malachite kingfisher, and (if you’re lucky!) the mysterious Pel’s fishing owl.
Boarding a mokoro is highly recommended for safarists hoping to get really close to the Boro’s inhabitants. As the mokoro, a dug-out canoe, doesn’t have a motor, you can concentrate on the sounds as well as the sights of the river.
Why not while away a few hours fishing on the Boro river? Please note, as well as being dependent on water levels, fishing isn’t available during January and February, as this is breeding season.
Perfect for particularly adventurous safarists, this activity consists of venturing out into the Delta aboard a mokoro and in the company of an experienced guide. You can spend up to two nights in the wilderness!
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
The camp is accessed via 20 minutes’ flight from Maun Airport. It’s situated on a small palm-fringed island just off the southern tip of Chief’s Island, within the south-central region of the Delta. This area is known as Gunn’s Concession, and it’s fairly busy compared with other private reserves.
Most of the communal areas at Moremi Crossing occupy a crescent-shaped timber-and-thatch lodge building, positioned on the edge of the floodplains.
The main lounge contains nicely cushioned seating around coffee tables, and there are lots of additional lounge spaces throughout the lodge, on various levels. In the main dining area, chic wooden tables-and-chairs are set up in readiness for delicious meals, accompanied by drinks from the camp’s well-stocked bar. All parts of the lodge benefit from the structure’s open-sided design – there are amazing views over the South-Central Delta! Finally, tucked behind the building and surrounded by trees, there’s the swimming pool, which is flanked by sunloungers and small tables.
There are 16 tents, including one honeymoon tent and another for family use.
All nestle in the shade of trees such as ebony, ilala palm, and mangosteen. Raised on wooden decking, the tents are Meru in style – an exterior layer of canvas extends over the inner layer to form a private veranda at the front. The veranda is set with a couple of safari chairs and a small table, and it’s a great spot for relaxing and enjoying your views over waterways, floodplains, grasslands, and woods! Entering a standard tent, you’ll find a comfortable double or twin bedroom, with a door leading to the en-suite washroom. The latter space contains a flush toilet, washbasin, storage furniture, and outdoor shower. The honeymoon tent has a bathtub on its veranda, while the accommodation for families offers a second bedroom with twin beds for children.
