Activities

Tawi offers a great range of activities – game drives, nature walks, camel rides, and fly camping.

Game drives

Camel ride and fly camping

Guided nature walks

  • Game drives take place during the morning, around midday, and at night, so you are guaranteed to see a wealth of wildlife! The Amboseli area is famous for its elephants, and you can look out for all other members of the Big Five – lion, rhino, leopard, and buffalo. Further predators include cheetah, spotted hyena, jackal, caracal, and wild cat, while the herbivore count features wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, and antelopes. If you venture into the woods, you might encounter baboon and vervet monkey!

  • All these sights can be enjoyed while on a camel ride too! And if you are keen for an adventure, you could consider fly camping, at any of the sites situated at a distance from the main lodge.

  • Guided afternoon nature walks are offered from this lodge, but we do not recommend that our travellers go on them. The guide doesn’t carry any firearms – and due to the presence of large dangerous game in the area, we strongly advise against taking part in this activity.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Facilities

The communal building is constructed from timber, stone, and thatch, in the classic safari style! It has two storeys, containing four lounges, a dining room, and two bars.

All of these spaces are very comfortable, boasting superb views not only of the plains and mountain, but also of a busy waterhole. You can relax and enjoy a drink or some fine dining while watching elephant, zebra, and antelopes coming to quench their thirst and splash about in the water. The grounds of the lodge include two pools – one is a solar-heated swimming pool, and the other is a wading pool for young guests. The swimming pool is flanked by sunloungers, providing a very peaceful area in which to chat, read a book, or settle into a doze. There is also a fire-pit, fantastic for mingling with your fellow travellers and swapping safari stories. And the spa, a short distance from the main building, is perfect for a little pampering, including massages and even a hot bath at sunset – bliss!

Amenities

Guest accommodation at Tawi Lodge consists of 13 safari cottages, all dotted around the grounds.

All are made out of timber, stone, and thatch, like the main building. Each is raised on wooden beams, with a few steps up onto a lovely veranda set with sunloungers and comfy chairs. This is a wonderful place to watch out for wildlife! Inside, every cottage has a sumptuous four-poster double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a large storage trunk, a writing desk and chair, and a cozy fireplace. The en-suite facilities are equally well appointed, comprising flush toilet, twin washbasins, separate shower, and big bathtub. The décor is very luxurious yet with a snug and homely feel – we really like it at Yellow Zebra.
