Little Chem Chem is the little sibling of Chem Chem Lodge. In common with the larger property, it’s owned and run by ex-professional safari guide Nicolas Negre and former investment banker Fabia Bausch, his wife. Nicolas and Fabia aim to provide superb safari experiences while caring for the local ecosystem and the communities around camp. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including three meals daily, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, arrival transfer from Kuro Airstrip, all safari activities in Chem Chem’s reserve, game drives into Tarangire, village visits, Wi-Fi, and a laundry service. Children incur a reduced rate – please get in touch with us for details. The camp is closed from 1st April to 31st May every year.

  • The concession contains a fine assortment of predators and some seriously impressive concentrations of herbivores. If you venture into Tarangire, you can look out for four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – in addition to numerous smaller mammal species and hundreds of feathery friends.

  • The park’s elephant migration occurs between June and October, but wildlife viewing is exceptionally good throughout the year. Both half-day and full-day trips are offered in Tarangire and Chem Chem, and night drives are possible within the concession.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

Access & Location

The camp is found in the eastern region of the Chem Chem Concession, within the Burunge Wildlife Management Area. This area is situated between the national parks of Tarangire and Lake Manyara, and it’s characterised by big baobab trees amidst sprawling grassland. Little Chem Chem is accessed via 3 hours 30 minutes’ road transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport, 2 hours’ drive from Arusha, or 1 hour 30 minutes’ drive from Lake Manyara Airstrip. Alternatively, you can enjoy a game drive transfer into camp, in the company of a knowledgeable guide.

With comfortable sofas and armchairs, campaign-style chairs, an explorer’s chest for a coffee table, and even a few candles, it’s a relaxing space in which to get to know your fellow travelers and look out for the local wildlife! Board games and an iPod are also available, and the décor is similar to the guest accommodation. Little Chem Chem’s dining room is found in a separate tent, and it’s usually the setting for breakfasts and lunches. Alternatively, you can enjoy breakfast in your own tent, and bush dining is another option here. Dinners are formal affairs, served up by a private butler. The camp has plenty of secluded locations for private dining, and if necessary an extra lounge tent can be rigged up for group use. There’s also a curio shop, and of course a campfire for pre-dinner drinks and general gatherings! Both the lounge tent and the dining tent boast amazing views over a nearby waterhole, which is well lit up at night to provide exciting sightings of the resident nightlife.

These are quite close together compared with guest accommodation at other properties in the Tarangire region, but each benefits from a sesame grass wall offering ample privacy. The roof of every tent hangs well over its canvas walls, creating a pleasant veranda. The veranda is set with a couple of chairs, a table, and a rocking chair, and it’s a fantastic spot for watching the wildlife wander by! Inside each standard tent, there’s a double bed or twin beds, bedside cabinets and lighting, a standing fan, two storage trunks, a writing desk and chair, a tea-and-coffee station, and a seating area with comfy chair and anglepoise lamp for reading. The furniture is mainly mid- to dark wood, and the palette features earth tones and splashes of safari green. Triple rooms are available too, and the family tent has an additional bedroom. The en-suite facilities in every tent comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, and classic bucket shower! Complimentary toiletries are supplied.
