With probably the best location in its price bracket, Swala Camp is seemingly loved by anyone who stays there…and it offers a few more classic ‘creature comforts’ than other similarly priced properties. Owned and operated by Sanctuary who also runs Yellow Zebra favorite Kusini, Swala Camp is highly recommended for travelers seeking a deluxe base from which to explore Tarangire.

Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, all drinks except premium brands, transfers between Kuro Airstrip and camp, two daily shared game viewing activities, Wi-Fi, and a laundry service. Children aged 15 years and younger are required to share with their parents, incurring a reduced rate – please contact us for details.

Great character, and with elephants seemingly hanging around the camp all day Swala is my favorite of all the properties inside the park.

Beekeeping projects

  • You can look out for four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – in addition to numerous smaller predators and herbivores, such as cheetah, hyena, jackal, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and all sorts of antelopes!

    Sanctuary Swala Game Drive
  • The birdlife is prolific here, featuring ostrich, tawny eagle, red-and-yellow barbet, and bare-faced go-away bird among the park’s five hundred plus species.

    Sanctuary Swala Game Drive
  • Come nightfall, you can venture out to encounter such nocturnal species as wild cat, spotted genet, bat-eared fox, and various owls.

    Sanctuary Swala Game Drive
  • Walking safaris are another daytime activity, in the company of a guide and an armed ranger who’ll introduce you to the particularly isolated areas of Tarangire. You can enjoy tracking elephant, zebra, impala, ostrich, and more!

    Sanctuary Swala Game Drive
  • If you visit any time from June to October, you can witness the park’s amazing elephant migration season, when huge herds of the gentle giants stomp through the area in search of water.

    Sanctuary Swala Game Drive
  • And guests of Swala can also take a look at Sanctuary’s beekeeping project, based in the nearby village of Mwika. The villagers harvest honey, which is sold through Sanctuary Swala with all sale proceeds reinvested in the project. As well as buying a few jars, you can learn all about the project from the beekeepers themselves!

Each stands on a wooden deck, and a few steps lead up onto the veranda. Here you’ll find a couple of campaign chairs and a table, as well as some comfy seating – it’s a great spot for relaxing and watching wildlife such as elephants and antelopes wander by! Inside every pavilion, there’s a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, LED lights overhead, a couple of end-of-bed stools, a writing desk and chair, two armchairs, and an umbrella stand. Additional amenities include mosquito nets, fans, an electronic safe, yoga mats, and a hairdryer. A tall partition behind the bed or beds separates the bedroom area from the washroom. The latter space contains a flush toilet, twin washbasins in a stand with mirror over, and an indoor shower that extends out to a very spacious outdoor shower! There’s also a storage unit for clothes and other belongings, and a selection of complimentary toiletries. Each pavilion is sufficiently large to sleep a maximum of three adults, or two adults and one child.
