South Luangwa National Park

On the first day of your trip, you will fly to the South Luangwa National Park and transfer to Mchenja Bush Camp. Mchenja means ‘ebony’, and the camp is shaded under a beautiful canopy of ebony trees. The Luangwa river rushes along a nearby bend in the watercourse, attracting a lot of thirsty wildlife! The main areas of camp are constructed around a fallen ancient ebony tree, bestowing a rather magical feel to the place. Both the lounge and dining areas are comfortable, and the camp’s plunge pool is great for cooling off in the heat of the day between activities! Mchenja also has a family unit containing two bedrooms, able to accommodate two adults and up to three children. Activities focus on day and night game drives and walking safaris. Vehicle and walking safaris from this camp are really top notch. The levels of guiding and service are some of the highest standards in the entire valley.

Lower Zambezi National Park

For the second half of your safari, you will fly to Chongwe Camp. Situated just outside the Lower Zambezi National Park, the camp has beautiful views of the river confluence and a stunning escarpment as the backdrop. The main areas are super-comfortable and incorporate an old termite mound into their design! Meals are often enjoyed al fresco, on the riverbank, while watching the local wildlife come to drink. Activities are centred on game drives, walking safaris, boat trips, and canoeing. We love the Lower Zambezi as it provides a really nice change in activities – you can focus a bit more on boat safaris, fishing, and canoeing here. This is also one of the best areas in Africa for tiger fishing.

Overview & Activities

One of our favorite trips in Africa involves the combination of the South Luangwa National Park and the Lower Zambezi. These two amazing safari areas give you a beautifully rounded experience, offering both the dry game viewing of the savanna and the lush waterways of the Zambezi.

The safari starts with four nights in the South Luangwa, which is famous for its epic walking safaris, night drives, and excellent leopard viewing (arguably the best in Africa!) After this, you will have four nights in the Lower Zambezi, which offers walking safaris, boating, game drives, and canoeing. To have this diversity of activities is thrilling, and Zambia offers a truly authentic safari experience.

The two properties we use for the trip are Mchenja Bush Camp and Chongwe Camp. Mchenja is situated on the banks of the Luangwa river, set amidst a grove of ebony trees. Chongwe is just outside the official boundary of the Lower Zambezi National Park, on the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi rivers.
